Hey I was wondering, how hard is it to interface with excel documents? I'm looking to make a small tool that will help with a process that is way too time consuming here at work. Basically what I need to do is parse through an html file and save out a bunch of images, descriptions, file names to an excel document.

This doesn't seem as though it would be that difficult to accomplish, I figured I'd use C++ or C# for the tool my main question was the creating of the excel file and if it would be possible or not.

thanks

Yeah, it can definitely be done without much trouble. When I first started programming, I wrote something in VB to dump the contents of text files into Excel spreadsheets and do some basic calculations, though it's been so long ago that I'm sure the methods I used no longer exist.

If you just want to put text into an Excel file, with no formulas or such, it might be easier to write a "CSV" file.

Also, when you say you want to save out an image to an Excel document, I hope you mean the image's path (text) and not the image itself.

there are no formulas that i need to be saved out. I need to be able to save out pictures (not the file path, the actual image) and text in an adjacent cell. Unfortunately the format (excel) and what needs to be stored is not up to me, I just need to figure our if it is possible, and if so to do it

ummm... I don't know about the "Easy" claim. In some programming environments, yes it is easy (Visual studios and C#, NP). In others, it is a nightmare. In Pure unadulterated C++ it is not an easy task at all.

well i had planned to use C# most likely as I have experience with it and it seems like the fastest way. is there an issue specific to placing pictures in excel documents that I should be aware of?

It can be done - look up the Shapes.AddPicture() method on MSDN and/or Google. To determine the cell, set the Excel.Range property before calling AddPicture().

The AddPicture() method is in the "Core" Office Interop library - meaning it can be used for Word and Powerpoint also (I haven't tested this).

Edit: Even though it is implied, just to clarify, you can use either VB.NET or C#.
