Question About FSB speeds on Pentium 4

i have a question about the FSB speeds on the pentium 4 ...

i am selling my AMd xp2000+ based system and i got an intel brand D845WN off a buddy for 25 bucks .lol good deal huh anyways my question is as follows....

the intel website says this board only supports a 400 mhz FSB...so i have two questions
1. could a bios update possibly increase the supported FSB speed to 533mhz or even 800 mhz?

2. if i was to purchase a CPU with a higher FSB and just run it only at 400mhz would that work.. and what kind of performance hit would i take ?

3. if i was to purchase a board supporting a 800 fsb(specifically the MSI Neo), and put a chip only supporting a 400 mhz fsb would the board still operate well?(of course not to its full capacity i know this)or would this make the new board virtually a waste?

1. maybe...maybe not cuz its intel boards. look to see waht the bios updates do for the specific board. if they say "now supports 533mhz fsb p4s" then go for it ...i dobut they will support 800mhz fsb cpus though

2. if you bought a 2400mhz 533fsb cpu, it will run only at 1800mhz....so you can see wht kind of performance hit it is (600mhz drop)

3. if the board supports higher fsb than the cpu can deliver stock, its no problem. thats why ppl overclock and want boards that can deliver high fsbs...to make the cpu take full advantage of the high fsbs the board is capable of

Before you sink any money into this board, you should know that it's not very good. I know b/c I have one and I'm looking to upgrade.

It only supports 400mhz fsb processors up to 2.8ghz with the latest P14 bios.
It uses PC133 memory and the memory bandwidth is only about 940kb/s (1064kb/s theoretical)
4x AGP
No chance to overclock

There's a lot of boards that will support 400/533mhz processors for under $90 (some around $60)

I don't think a higher fsb cpu will work on this board.

There are some 865PE boards that will support 400/533/800 fsb (it's spec'd in the chipset) but there are a few that will. I believe the Asus P4P800 will support all fsb speeds and will also support PC1600, PC2100, PC2700 and PC3200 memory. It will work but it won't be as fast as it can be. For the cost of the board, you should get a 800 fsb cpu (I'm looking at the 2.4c for $187)

well bobby thanx very much for the info... now the best thing to do would be to buy a celeron 2.0 and sell the whole comp for a few hundred....now the question of ages..........P4 with hyper threading... or the new XP3000+ series

There's a thread in the motherboard forum about P4 2.4c or 2500+ Barton. There's about $100-$170 difference (cpu, mobo, memory only)

HT sounds good but you won't notice it until apps are actually coded to take advantage of it. Some apps go slower with HT enabled now.

AMD is at the end of its lifecycle. I don't think they can get it faster than the 3200+ and 400mhz fsb.
