Question about Homecoming

Uhh... What exactly is homecoming and what does it consist of. I know that is a stupid question, especially since I am sort of a high school senior, but I honestly don't know what that is all about.

As far as I can tell it is a pretty major event (if not the most major event of the fall semester) during high school. I presume homecoming will consist of a dance + other stuff, but what about the specifics. Like what is that "other stuff." And how important is the dance? It is at all like a prom (with the highly formal wear and stuff) during the fall semester or something where people plan for a month or so ahead about?

When is the opportune time to ask someone out to the homecoming dance?

at our school, its basically just a dance, but rather formal. not as formal as the prom, but it is a semi-formal (suit, tie, not a tux).

During the dance they announce the senior varsity athletes for the fall, and they crown the king and queen.

you should probably ask a few weeks in advance, and buy your date a crosage. Before it, I went out with my friends for dinner, but we didn't get a limo or anything, just a car is fine.

at my high school homecoming was a big thing.

Homecoming was pretty much the spirit week for the school, where all the classes compete with each other to see who was the most spirited. We had rallies mon-thurs at lunch, one for each class. On friday was the inter class rally where the four classes basically had a big shouting competition. Throughout the week each class built big floats, built according to each class theme. Homecoming would have one general theme, such as "decades" and each class would pick a specific part of "decades" such as "the fifties." All their activities in that week are related to their specific theme. We also had a wall put up in the cafeteria that we would paint with our sister classes about our specific themes.

also during the week we would vote for our homecoming king and queen. in theory it was supposed to honor the people that had helped out our school and community the most. in reality it's a big popularity contest. we'd announce the winners at halftime of the football game on friday nite. and our football team sucked so that was the highlight.

saturday nite we would have the homecoming dance and that's basically just another dance, semi formal (suit and tie) homecoming is just a big crazy week of no sleep for many many people.

yup, pretty much the same at my high school. Also during homecoming week we would dress up to different themes everyday. Like one day would be 70's day, or incognito day, and Friday would be school colors day.

All I did was go to the football game and watch our team lose 55-0 or something like that!

beats me... I was known for my lack of interest in extra-curricular activities.

Homecoming is Prom, but it's fun and costs less.

Prom is great too, don't get my wrong, but everybody is thinking "damn, this was expensive", and looking back more of the fun times lay back during homecoming week.

Still go to your senior prom, though.
