Question about Internet connection Speed

I have a cable modem, and when I connect it directly to the computer, I get download/upload speeds in the range of 6000/1000. However, when I connect the computer through the router, to the modem, the speed dips considerably. What can I do to rectify this?

Also, why is it that the speeds given by bandwidth meters are always much much MUCH higher than the actual download speed? For example, downloads through bit-torrent (I have ports forwarded correctly), is only ~400kbps. Thanks.

Unfortunately download speed is not just depending on your computer.

If a Server is slow then it does not matter what your computer is capable of.

I assume that you are sophisticated enough to know where your BT traffic is coming from.

As for the Router, if it is a good Router hardware wise, then look at the Router's MTU.

when it comes to networking, there is always a bottleneck somewhere.

That being said - every single "speed test" sites out there are no where near accurate. no where near accurate.

Thanks for the response. I'll look into it.

Also, can someone please tell me what is the command to find out how many packets are being lost. The cable installer said that there were no packets being lost when I was connected directly to the modem, but lots of packets lost when through the router. That's why. Thanks.

I don't know on SOHO routers. Maybe try checking the support page or calling the manufacturer.

The DOS command "PathPing" wlll show losses at each step.

For instance: "PathPing yahoo.com"

The reason the number are different, you've got 6000 kbps / 1000 kbps this number is kiloBITS, if you want to get your theoretical max speeds, you take that number and divide by 8 to get kiloBYTES, so your realistic speeds from your connection is 750 KBps / 125 KBps

Hope that helps.
