Question about Lian Li A70FB/A71FB
Just to preface. I have a Lian Li case similar to the Lian Li PC-8NB. The difference is that in the HDD bay mine will take up to 5 drives sitting on their side. I had 5 drives in this bay, 2x 75G 10000 RPM and 3x 320GB 7200 RPM. I started having issues with my PC randomly rebooting for no apparent reason. I started to suspect overheating and so the first thing I did was to mount the 2x 75GB 10000 drives in the two spare 5.25" drive bays that I had. Having 5 drives mounted in the HDD bay meant there was only 1-2mm from memory between the drives. Obviously not enough space to get enough cooling between the drives for the drives that I have. Moving the two 75G 10000RPM drives eliminated my random reboot issue and I haven't had one since.
So my question is, if I was to fill all HDD bays in the Lian Li A70FB, how much space is there between the drives?
I don't want to wind up again with HDD's overheating and a randomly rebooting PC again.
The other theory of course is that the 5 drives being in the one place was causing a lot of heat, the fan cooling the drives was cauing that heat to blow over something else that was over heating and then causing the reboots. Now that there is only 3 drives in that place the hot air from cooling 3 drives isn't hot enough to cause the other part to overheat.
Suffice to say though I'm not comfortable having all my HDD's squashed next to each other with next to no space between them, particularly when some of them are 10000RPM drives and the do seem to generate a lot more heat than normal drives.
The alternative to the A70FB is the A77F.
Pricing from www.pccasegear.com (Australian Dollars)
A70FB - $280
A71FB - $320
A77F - $445
The A77F has 12 5.25" bays which would allow me to put many more HDD's in with enough space around the drives for cooling. However if the A70FB has a bit of space between the drives this should be enough.
If I have to leave on bay empty between each drive for cooling in the A70FB this will only allow me to put in 6 drives. I currently have 5 and am looking to increase that.
