question about linksys usb100m driver for windows 7

I am running Windows 7 Pro x64 bit, and I was unable to get a driver from Cisco's website that worked for a Linksys USB100m model usb network adapter. Windows was unable to find the driver as well. As of now, I am unable to use the USB 100M Etherfast Network Adapter. Is there a workaround or a driver download I don't know about, or is the device simply incompatible with Win 7? What if I were to get the driver working on an XP computer, and then transfer the driver over to my Win 7 comp? Could that work?

Some old stuff is not comptatible with Win 7 and there is Nothing that you can do about it.

I have Net cards from Win98se that are not even compatible with WinXP, and others that are compatibles with XP, but Not with Vista.

Tires from my old cars do not fit my current car either.

Here's a fun little excercise: try finding a SCSI HBA that works in Windows 7 64-bit. I'll give you a hint: there's only one.

Windows 7 broke the driver model...though I can understand why they did it after the problems with Vista in the early days.

It is not necessarily Windows per-se. In most cases Microsoft does not write the drivers for the supported hardware, it is usually submitted by the vendors to be included in the original release of an OS, or later to be stored on Windows Update site.

No submission, No drivers directly through Windows.

When it comes to old chipsets that are beyond EOL. Some vendors can not write New Drivers because of the limited capacity of the old Chipset, many others do not bother.

Thank you for your help, but you didn't answer my question. Would it be possible to copy the driver from one computer with XP to another comp that has Win 7? Or is each driver for each OS separate and different from each other?

I think I have to agree with you drebo, Win 7 has given me a great deal more driver problems than Vista did, although this is before 7 has a service pack released for it, so I won't speak too soon.

Drivers for Win XP in most cases would not work with Win 7.

Drivers from Vista might.

Thank you for the link Lepard. I have downloaded the zip file and extracted it. Problem is, I can't use it. All that remains in the folder is two system files (.sys) and one setup info file. I renamed the two .sys to .exe, and I got the message: "Cannot be run in Win32 mode." This doesn't make any sense, as I am opening the files with Windows finder, and not win32. Also, I am running the 64 bit version of win 7. Is there any way to get these two files to run so that I can install the driver?

UPDATE: Ok I got the files back to .sys version, and then I installed the drivers manually through Device Manager in the Control Panel. The driver installed, but the device didn't work, because it is not digitally signed. Without this digital signature, Windows cannot verify its source and therefore considers it a hostile program. Thus, the drivers do not work correctly. Is there any way to get these drivers you linked me signed, so that I can use them?

Make sure you're pointing the Device Manager to the 64 folder (for the 64-bit driver).
Conversely, you can download the 4mb file and run the Setup so it chooses for you.

I have tried both methods on this same Linksys device and never had a problem.

Well Lepard, here's the update. I guess I had the wrong driver downloaded. So I downloaded the 4mb and ran the Setup. However, even after it installed, the device was not recognized. So I directed the Device Manager to the 64 bit folder in Vista, and that worked. So now the device is recognized; sort of. While the Device Manage says that the device is working normally, I'm not getting any Internet signal with the adapter, and it is not available in the remove devices menu, meaning it is still not actively running. Is there one more step that I might be missing? Thanks again for your help.

I've just got an update for this thread. I have verified that the RealTek 64-bit Driver also works for Windows 8. Also they now have (as of this posting) a signed 64 bit driver version 1.26. So we now can use it for all the following Microsoft OS's:
Win98SE
WinME
Win2K
WinXP
WinVista
Win7
Win8

If for some reason you wanted to use it for a server OS (Windows 2008, 2008 R2, etc.) It would also work for those, since Microsoft names the server OS different from the Desktop OS, even though architecture is the same as the Desktop. For example, Windows Server 2008 is Actually Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 is Actually Windows 8, etc.

Good luck and have fun!

That uses the RTL8150 chipset... get the Vista x64 drivers from Realtek.

Check out the following link:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...n=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true

The link above did not work for me.

Try the following.

RTL8150L(M) Single-Chip USB to Fast Ethernet Controller with MII Interface General Description

RTL8150L(M) Software

OR search for RTL8150 on Realtek website

https://www.realtek.com/en/

I have not tried using the drivers yet.
Please let us all know what OS you are using and how it works for you.
