question about mounting a plasma

It looks like my building uses metal studs, and I can't drill into it using what I have. Would you just use anchors against the dry wall / sheetrock, without using any studs? The 42" plasma itself is about 40lb. The mount probably adds another 10. So the total weight should be around 50. Are there any special anchors I can use that'll handle the weight?

Can't help you, but your weights seem too low. My Panny 42" plasma is about 70 lb, and I'd guess the typical wall mounts are more than 10 lb.

They do exist. We hung an LCD at my work place with them. They're rated at 40 pounds a piece.

My 32" LCD was about 40 pounds. I've heard plasma weighs more too than a comprable LCD. Sounds like you may need to take down part of the wall and install regular wood studs. I just wouldn't trust any kind of bracketing system with metal studs.

LOL, mount it to drywall.

Get a good drill, a nice new bit, use the biggest toggle bolts you can find, and make sure your mount attaches to at least 2 studs.

It would be best to get some screws onto the studs, but toggles will work just fine if you use enough of them.

Yeah, but are metal studs really meant to be used that way? Can they truly be used as normal studs for mounting things?

Thanks, I've seen this before, and a friend mentioned it as well. Has anyone ever used this before? Does it work?

edit

on a second look, this won't work with tv mounts. It's simply to hang things like frames, etc.

Your seriously thinking about mounting a plasma TV on a $14.99 "as seen on tv" drywall hook?

well...if the tv falls, then the hercules people will pay for his new tv? afterall, it holds 150 pounds per hook

doesn't matter when the drywall may only hold 50 lb per sq ft

Toggle bolts are strong as hell. Using toggle bolts at every mounting point will lead to a connection far stronger than what your TV will require.

Don't hammerdrill metal. Kills your bits. That's for stone only.

BBuy and CCity installers use drywall mounts all the time. It would seem frightening as hell to me.

And a 42" plasma + mount is gonna be more like 80lbs.

3 months from now, we're going to see a thread "my plasma is smashed, and there is a huge hole in my wall".
