Question about "Normal" P3 Temperature.

I have an 866EB FCPGA. I checked the temp on that thing through my CUSL2 BIOS and it says it runs at 52C which is like 110+ F. This seems awfully high?

I have a Golden Orb sitting on top of this thing too.

Does anyone know if this is "normal". Its not overclocked.

PS> I was thinking about modding the top of my case to blow out some of the hot air (bc everyone knows that hot air rises) through a 120MM fan.

I dont know. It just tells me the temp of the CPU. I couldnt give you an exact number.

what bios version are you using? there was a temperature over reading problem with the early bioses!
is your HSF on properly & is the fan working?
does your case have any cooling/ventilation fans?

Im not sure what BIOS version Im using. The HSF is on properly and tightly. The fan is working. I only have 1 case fan in the front bc thats all my case allows for. Thats why I wanted to mod the case.

Check and see if your gorb is on right. Normal p3 coppermines run at about 30-43 degrees celcius. I had about 4 p3 systems and they all ran at this temp(not oc'ed)

Mine runs at about 31 at Idle with a Gorb @ 933-1050 PIII 700 cc0

are you using any thermal paste between the cpu & HSF? in view of the "abnormal" temperature it may perhaps be an idea to clean the cpu/HSF & reapply a fresh layer of thermal paste.
a top blowhole should help get your case temperature down!

I wouldn't worry too much as long as it is stable. I saw a friend's system with a PIII 866 not overclocked running Win2K and the BIOS was reporting it as 65C under full load. The thing has not been rebooted for 16 days now, solid as a rock. My guess is these motherboard temp monitoring features are a bit of a waste of the user's time!

Mine read a temp of 145 deg. So I installed another sensor and that reads 28c... Then I bought a external therm from radioshack. The temp on it was 28c also! So I would not belive the bios temp!

After all the headaches I had with my P3700e@933 I finally have the CPU running at 41C under 100% load running SETI.
At rest it matches or goes 1C lower than the Mobo temp.
Right now my mobo temp is sitting at 28C.
If I kill SETI the temp drops almost immediately to 28C. This tells me my Alpha is doing the job.
Funny thing is, before I busted off the little tabs on the fcpga socket that the heat sink attaches to and wired the thing down with bailing wire my cpu temp running seti was 10C higher than it is now.
That's progress for you. Only took me about two days of hell to get it wired down to the the board so it would work.

Wiz, still doing the bailing wire trick?.. Let me know how your repair kit worked for you.

I have another CUSL2 setup with the same processor speed and have mounted a Intel heatsink onto this thing. I checked the temp on the CPU and it reads 32C. I checked the BIOS version and it was 1001.A; the BIOS version on my other computer is 1002. I dont get it. Did the newer BIOS version screw up the CPU temp monitor...

Noooo... dont tell me that.

Ive just flashed the BIOS to the most current one 1003.

The CPU temp now reads 63C. DAMN thats not right!!

again, what is your MB temp? Maybe you have a warm case? Is your case temp is the high 30C/Low 40C range?

Sorry to break it to you, but the temps you got with the 1001 Bios were wrong.

Okay here is the breakdown of the numbers.

WINGZERO
========
MB Temp: 31C
CPU Temp: 65C
BIOS Ver: 1003
Heatsink: FCPGA Golden Orb
MotherBd: Asus CUSL2
CPU: P3 866EB FCPGA not OCed

ZEROONE
=======
MB Temp: 27C
CPU Temp: 32C
BIOS Ver: 1001A
Heatsink: Intel Heatsink
MotherBd: Asus CUSL2
CPU: P3 866EB FCPGA not OCed

Hopefully someone can explain what is going on here?
I will flash ZEROONE's bios tonite and see if that makes a difference in reading the temp.

Thanks all for replying and helping me out.
BTW, anyone know where I can buy Artic Silver Compound locally (LA Area)?
And where I can get a case mod done professionally?

Are they using the same heatsink? The 1003 or later bios should add some 18C to the reading.

How's the 2 cooling setups?

Arctic silver is available by order, only... Dont' know of any store that sells it.

I have a dual system with 2xP3 866 procs. When I first built the system CPU1 showed 41C and the other showed 52C while stressed at 100% load. I remounted the Orbs I had on them and found the CPU2 Orb was on "backwards". Basically instead of the Orb being centered on top of the plate, it was off to one side. Once I remounted the Orbs with some new Arctic and centered the Orb correctly, both CPUs now run right at 40C under full load.

Check to see that the Orb in on correcly. If it is not exactly centered in the middle you'll get bad thermal transfer through the Orb.

her209, I was getting those kinds of temps when my hsf wasn't sitting flat on the cpu.
After many hours of fiddling and some good advice here I got my heat shink turned around the right way and it sat on the core flat and the temp was normal. Then I had to go and try to 'improve' it...

mastertech01, millisec still hasn't got that kit to me. Guess they take a while to get the stuff out the door over there.

Your diode temp readings are WRONG... Mine did the same...it was idle at around 50C while the mb temp was around 30C... With my 2 other motherboards, the two temperatures were within 2C... read here to see how you correct the problem.
