Question about old Celerons

I was looking at some old data while waiting around recently and found something that doesn't seem right. I know a lot of people around here are CPU historians in a sense so...

The "Allendale" Celeron E1200 to E1600 range are dual core parts yet Intel's ARK data shows them have 105M transistors, which is the same number as the single core Conroe-L parts?

That makes me think that the original Allendales were actually fabricated with 2 cores but one was disabled? But Allendale has 167M transistors.

So perhaps Conroe-L had 167M transistors all along, even the Celeron 420 to 450 series but Intel "counted" it as 105M since the one core was disabled. I do remember reading that a Core 2 Duo CPU had about 55M transistors so the math just about adds up.

But this would mean that Allendale and Conroe-L are actually the same die.

This is what you do while waiting at the dr.'s office with a smartphone

Yeah, one assumes that they're all die-harvested versions of the next step up. Intel's ARK pages might have either the transistor counts of the original silicon, or the transistor count of the "live" chip, depending on who did the data entry.

They get smaller amounts of L2/L3 cache by cutting that out too, without changing the published transistor count to reflect what's in use.

It really doesn't matter much. Have fun at your dr. appointment. (That reminds me, I have to schedule a trip to the dentist...)

It looks to me like the listing for the Intel® Celeron® E1600 is mistaken on the number of transistors it lists. When comparing it with other dual core processors with the same micro-architecture it has the same TDP and features all turned on http://ark.intel.com/compare/27248,28024,34751 also it is a dual core processor and not a single core like the Conroe-L were. Also while I hate to use outside resources but here is a nice chart on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conroe_(microprocessor)#Conroe-L . So it really comes down to the fact that if it is a dual core than it should be around 167million transistors and if it was only a single core it could be 105million.

So it's Allendale, not Conroe-L.

Thanks guys. Just a check-up. All's good.
