Question about Radeon 9800 pro 256/256 cooling...

Hi everyone,

I recently ordered a radeon 9800 pro 256/256 card off newegg.com, and I'm interested in flashing it into a 9800xt. I'm pretty clueless with computers, but reading around here it seems that the Arctic "Ati silencer 3" was the most suggested. However, when I went to newegg to check the prices/reviews, there were a few people saying that it no longer fits the 256 meg card. Any suggestions as what I should do? Are there any other good cooling systems?

Haven't heard anything about the VGA silencer rev. 3 from Arctic cooling not fitting the 9800P 256MB? As long as they haven't mixed with the hsf holes in the card and left RAM sinks at the height they usually are you should be fine.

if your clueless about computers, i wouldn't attempt a flash on your vid card. unless you have a pci vid card around or onboard incase of a bad flash.

The first 3 reviews all state that it doesn't fit, so I'm looking for other options. Do any of you happen to know any good substitutes?

Also, if I don't flash into a 9800xt, is there still a good reason to get a cooling system? Thank you!

yes. 9800 pro's run very hot. If you are looking to o/c to xt speeds then i would for sure get a new hsf for it.

One of the new vga silencers would do nicely

The Zalman ones with the optional fan also work very well, just make sure you've got some room spare in your case.
