What does moving the refresh rate up do? Recently bought a 6600gt when I had my old card in I never messed with refresh rate so don't know what to set it at. Any suggestions?

the higher the better

set it at 85hz, and it reduces flickering on your screen. I can't explain it, but just do it.

When its a a low refresh rate (60hz) you'll see flickering and flashing on the screen; it can get very annoying and hurt your eyes. Set it as high as it'll go.

Within spec, of course.

With a CRT monitor, you'll want to aim for 85-100Hz to avoid excessive eye strain. With an LCD monitor, 60Hz should suffice, but going up to 75Hz on an LCD that supports it might improve framerates and mouse feel, assuming the game is capped by vsync.

Should I set Antialiasing to application controlled? What about anisotropic setting?

A refresh rate is how many times the screen refreshes. You could say, how many frames it draws on the screen per second.

Moving the refresh rate up on a CRT gives you a less flickering picture and faster response when you move your mouse. 85Hz and up is recommended. You should never use the maximum refresh rate. But if you want the highest you can get, use the refresh rate just below the maximum. Setting the refresh rate to the maximum may give you a fuzzy picture which contributes to eye strain.

Moving the refresh rate up on an LCD will increase response time only. LCDs are naturally flicker free. Although, it is not recommended that you move your refresh rate from it's optimal specification.

Antialiasing, you should probably set to application controlled. Most games don't support it, although you can force it, some games may malfunction as a result. But really it is up to you and how much you desire the effect VS how well your graphics card can handle the effect. This also applies to Anisotropic Filtering.

Antialiasing smooths out jagged edges that occur in games. Generally, raising the resolution is preferred to enabling Anti-aliasing.

Anisotropic Filtering corrects blurry textures that are looked at, at an angle. A texture is the image of a wall that you see when you look at the wall in a game.

Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering are only for games.

Here is what my settings are at - I'll only note the changes from default. Check Show advanced settings.

Image Settings: High Quality
Vertical Sync: On
Force Mipmaps: Trilinear
Negative LOD bias: Clamp

These settings will give you the best image quality aside from forcing Anistropic Filtering and Anti-aliasing. I usually enable them, if I can, in games that support them.

If there is a game that supports them. In the game's menu, enable Anisotropic Filtering first and set it to 8x and see if you performance is any good. I don't think 16x is worth it. If not then lower it from there. If it is, then you could try enabling Antialiasing. But remember, higher resolutions first.
