Question about rifles

I'm strongly left eye dominant and have been thinking about picking up a couple rifles and a shotgun soon. There are some models I really like but I have issues with right handed weapons (like hot brass in my face). Pistols are usually ok because of the way I stand, but any weapon fired from the shoulder is a big problem.

Anyone know of good weapons made for lefties? Not things like mag release and safety and stuff (although that all helps too), mostly talking about brass ejection, bolt, and stock design.

Just realized more info would be helpful. I'll be buying a new long rifle, assault rifle, and tactical shotgun. I'm hoping to find options for all of those categories. I already know Remington makes a few 700 series for lefties, so that's an option on the long.

Just because you're left-eye dominant doesn't mean you have to hold the gun left-handed...

With a pistol no, I can turn so that I can get perfect alignment. With a rifle, when actually aiming, yes I do. At least if I want to hit anything I do. And that's been supported through studies. You need to use your dominant eye to sight with.

The Beretta CX4 is designed so everything (safety, cartridge ejection, mag release, cocking handle) can be changed from righty to lefty. You might want to check that gun out.

Very interesting. I'm a little put off at it using pistol calibers, but I'd like to get a hold of one and see if I like it anyway. Thanks!!!

Another excellent choice is the Ruger Model 77 chambered in many fine non-magnum calibers. I have it chambered in the 30-06 myself.

I'll second the Ruger. I'm a leftie that's right eye dominant, and you DO need to follow your dominant eye. I hated doing it, because I'm sooo left handed. Now many years later, it doesn't bother me a bit. I had to learn to shoot right handed with a bow as well.

Anyone have thoughts on the FN PS90? With the downward ejection it should be usable, though I'm not very familiar with it overall.

hey there

as stated above both the ruger and the savage are great lefty pieces
as far as the other-FN PS90--don t bother-trust me:disgust: my one question
is are you a lefty or are you going by eye dominance, im left eye dominant
and im a lot sharper with righty guns, are you going to be target, hunting,???
i only do long range-500-1000 yrds military ranges so pick your caliber accordingly

gimmie some info on what you would like to do

I'm strongly right handed, but also strongly left eyed. The first day of nationals (my first major competition) I tried shooting right but was doing terrible. I switched to left on the second day and just put up with the brass scalding and suddenly could do no wrong. I'm not saying it would be impossible to train myself to shoot right, but so far no one has been able to coach me effectively on doing so.

With a pistol I do a 3/4 left forward stance in a right hand grip, twisting my head to give perfect alignment. Works very well for me - strong hand, strong eye. Just looks bloody weird.

With a rifle I can't get away with that. I have some issues working the bolt quickly and smoothly because I'm so uncoordinated with my left hand, but I think I could train it. Has to be better than getting brassed and the visual interruption of my right hand crossing in front to work the bolt.

I target shoot for fun now, no competition (though I wouldn't rule it out in the future). I don't hunt, and I consider my weapons defensive in nature and not sporting. Hence the specification of tactical shotgun and not a hunting or trapping shotgun. The long rifle is supposed to be a sniping rig, pure and simple. I'd want it for 300+yrd target shooting only. The more I look the more I'm thinking about splitting my assault category into two rifles, a cqb smallish one and a larger to fill the 100-300yrd gap.

My state doesn't allow class III so that's out. As for caliber I'm not too worried about cost for target shooting since I don't get out all that often. I'd rather have weapons that are chambered correctly for tactical benefit at the ranges specified above.

Hm, my dad is left handed and has a nice lefty, bolt-action 30-06; I don't know what kind it is, though.

It sounds like the CX4 would be a good pick for the CQB tactical rifle, since that's what it's built for. There's no bolt to fool with since it's semi auto, and all the controls can be put on whatever side you like them on. Me and my buddies went shooting today with it, and found that it's accurate (hit a tin can accurate, anyway) up to 100 yards.

By the way: My buddies are all righties, and they weren't getting hit by any ejecting hot brass even though the gun is set for lefty ejection.
