I want to share my cable modem connection with another computer but I do not want to purchase another IP. This is what I have in mind: 2 NICs on the computer with the modem and one on the other computer, and connect them via a crossover cable, then use ICS to share the internet connection. Will this work? I've been reading up on this at timhiggins.com and in the section regarding crossover cables, it says: "Be sure to contact your ISP and order your additional IP addresses!" I don't want to pay another 10 bucks. Thanks.

darkmanx is right, if you use proxy software, you won't need it. remember not to mention that to your cable company though, they may not allow more than one comp/ip address. this isn't to say that they would be able to tell if you were using 2 comps or not, just don't admit to it and you will be fine.

hehe, I just got my cable installed this week after being on a 2+ month waiting list. They had trouble because I already had a network card installed that goes to my laptop. I really only need to be able to get work files to my home machine for backup. They automatically assumed I wanted internet on my laptop and they were more than happy to discuss how to do it. They knew the rules, just didn't care. They even said "everyone does it". LOL

Consider a hardware router (as I am) rather than using one machine as a router as you are suggesting. Why?

-> Way easier to setup

-> Much more reliable

-> Neither machine depends on the other to be on for it to have network access

-> Only like $100 these days

Seriously, unless you want a challenge, I'd consider it. I setup up a FreeBSD machine doing NAT for my DSL connection. They recently changed me to PPPoE and I don't want to expend the time and effort to get it set up to do that. I'm just going to spend the $100 and take the easy way out. I still may use the other machine as a file server, but I won't have to count on it being up for the network to work.
