Hi, I'm considering swapping out my P3 650 for a T-bird. My question is, if I swap the motherboard and proc, will I have to reconfigure my operating system (me) or is it a direct plug in?
Any info would be much appreciated.

I *think* you would have to clear everything out of your device manager and reinstall all your hardware. If thats the case, it would be alot easier just to reinstall windows.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You don't "have to" but it would be recommended
I did this only 3 days ago and then formatted yesterday
Everything was running fine after windows re-installed according to the new config.
However I could not get my internal modem to connect - it would install but not connect - error 630 etc etc
I then decided to run "add hardware" - big mistake.....lol...after that it found lots of other new stuff and then everything went haywire
Try it first and see if it works OK?
Nothing to lose really

I've done the same thing and found my system clawed and had way too many problems. format unless you want to delete everything in device manager and then delete all the old drivers in your windows dir, probably fatser just to wipe and start a fresh

The only time I've had this work flawlessly was moving the hard drive to an identical computer (same brand, same components...gave my old drive to my girlfriend). Otherwise, to say on aggravation later, you might as well format. Why put yourself through all the hassle of troubleshooting and THEN formatting anyway?

I made the same move you're fixing to make just a few months ago. I tried to boot up the system with the new board (Abit KT7) and the T-Bird chip that was fresh out of the shipping box.

To say that the system had a fit would be a vast understatement. I think that what made it even more difficult was the fact that I was going from an Intel chipset (iBX440) to the VIA KT133 chipset. Completely different animal.

And don't forget to install chipset drivers. Windows 98?ME doesn't recognize the newer chipsets that are out. Thats' the main purpose of these driver sets (ie..VIA 4 in 1)...the new drivers tell Windows how to send data and information on the new chipsets.

Bottom line...just format and reinstall the OS. You'll be much happier for it later.

Like the rest, I would recommend that you simply reformat. However, if you choose not to, then boot up in SAFE MODE and remove everything from the device manager. The reboot with only the CPU, motherboard, RAM, and hard drive installed. Then, add your peripherals one at a time, doing a hard reboot between each installation. You'll probably still have lots of little problems, though.

For next time: As a result of having to reformat so many times, I now keep a ~2GB partition for each OS I have installed. I keep all my other files, documents, etc., on a single, large partition. That way, when I have to reinstall the OS, I can save all my stuff. Sure, it's not perfect, but much easier.
