Question about tabbed browsing

Just dumped IE7. To me, tabbed browsing is worthless if the browser opens up another instance when you click on a link rather than opening up another tab. Anyway, I didn't like the button layout in IE7 anyway.

I looked but could not find, a way to alter this behavior.

Does Firefox act the same way?

Haven't used IE7 yet so can't comment on that.
In FF you can set it however you want; open in new window, open in new tab on current window, force links to open in new tab that would normaly open in new window.
There's probably even extensions to give more control.

Tools Menu -> Options -> Tabs is where you can force new pages to open in tabs in Firefox.

This works in IE7 too, Tools -> Internet Options -> General -> Tabs Settings.

You get various options, such as

"When a pop-up is encountered:" to which to options are: "Let Internet Explorer decide how pop-ups should open","Always open pop-ups in a new window","Always open pop-ups in a new tab".

"Open links from other programs in:" to which the options are: "A new window", "A new tab in the current window", "The current tab or window".

If you set those two appropriately, it works just as you wanted.

So far, I like Firefox better. The layout is much cleaner and intuitive and I've been able to find all the settings I've looked for. This is important to me because I want the browser to act the way I want it to. It's been a while since i tried Firefox. It's definitly changed. Looks like a keeper this time. Now I gotta find a spell checker for it.

Firefox 2.0 apparently comes with a spell checker built in and it's at rc3 right now so I'm sure you won't have to wait long.

The spell checker is a bit strange, though, as it doesn't like words such as unbeknownst. I guess it works well, and it caught an error I made on a college essay (rennaissance instead of renaissance... doh!), and you have the choice to add a word to the dictionary, so all is good.

Tab Mix Plus gives you a lot of control over the way Firefox handles Tabs, though. Once I upgraded to FF2.0, the auto-update didn't find anything for it, and I lived without it for about 3 days. It was a very strange and unhappy 3 days... but then I found the beta on the TMP website, and all is well.

Thanks. I knda like Firefox. Since i kinda don't like MS, I think I'll stick with it for now. Someday, I hope to migrate to Linux if ever there comes along a distro that's not retarded. lol.
