Question about this new DSLR camera - why the hell does it shake when I shut it off?

Hey guys,

I bought an Olympus E-510 dslr today, which is incredible, except that when I shut the thing off, it makes this shuddering noise for about half a second and vibrates. The lense and overall camera is working fine (as far as I can tell I'm fairly novice) but I don't know if this vibration / soft grinding is a bad thing and if I should return / exchange it.

I posted this on the Olympus forums but I figure someone here is going to know right away what the deal is.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks,
Rob

Not yet they're closed today I believe, and I've only had it for about 6 hours.

That's my next move short of bringing it to Henry's tomorrow.

Good question - I know it's supposed to have a good one - could this be possible? Anyone confirm?

That would be my guess, although I *thought* it was supposed to do that when the camera was started, not when it was shut down. That might be Pentax, though - been doing a lot research on cameras recently for a couple of possible Christmas presents.

That said, I don't have any experience using cameras with in-body IS. I will say, though, that I own 2 Canon IS lenses - the 17-85 and the 70-300. The IS kicks in when the shutter button is half-pressed, and on the short lens I can only rarely feel it working. The 70-300 always has a noticeable 'buzz' to it, though.

You're right Nathan, the dust reduction system operates on startup, there's a blue light the flashes when it's working.

I'm going to have to take this thing in tomorrow, I don't want to risk getting a shotty unit, I'll atleast see what they say.

Ok turns out it is the IS "initializing" itself when you turn it off, for whatever reason. Thanks guys!

When you turn the camera off, it locks down the IS system. In the Nikon VR lenses, you can feel the click (or clunk on the larger lenses) of the optics locking in place. Perhaps that's what's happening in your camera with the sensor-shift image stabilization.
