Do I need user lisences for either 2003 0r 2000 if the only thing I'm using it for is DHCP?

I have 2003 set up to be a DHCP server, and all is going well, except after 10 people connect the 11th person can't get to the internet. They can ping any other pc on the network, and connect to oue mail server though..

Any help would be cool and sweet.

what provides the internet connection for these machines? It sounds almost like you are running ICS on this server and if that's the case you would need more CALs before it will allow more machines to use its internet connection via ICS.

Generally speaking if they have an IP address than DHCP has done its job, also keep in mind that you would need several thousand computers pulling from this DHCP server before you would have more than a handfull of machines requesting addresses at any one point in time (assuming you have a decent interval set for the lease times).

As far as I'm aware the only time you would have to worry about more CALs is when you are running services that require that you have multiple host connected concurrently. Things like DHCP are a very quick connect/request/disconnect process and your clients would generally not remain connected for a very long period of time.

The funny thing about all this is that the PCs that can't connect are getting a "not autherized to view this page" error, not a "can't reach this page" error..

so back to my question, what provides the internet connection to these machines? Are you running ICS on your server as well or are you using a hardware router?

I don't know what you mean by ICS... I have narrowed the problem to users who have Win98 installed. XP and 2000 users have no problem at all.

My internet is provided by an inhouse T1.

The only thing I have running on this server is DHCP

when you did the install, I bet you only used the default number of CALS which is 10. I don't know exactly where to change that, but if I find something I will post back.

It's 2000 server (not advanced server). And scratch what I said before about win 98 pcs. I just had my first XP give me crap.

403 errors!! WHY!!!! hehe

It does not make sense to me that the pc would be fine internaly (able to ping everything) but some.. not all pcs can't connect to any websites:disgust:

Internet connection sharing, it's built into Windows. If you use it for routing your internet traffic than it requires a CAL for each connected user.
Nope, I used like 800 or some other large number
Unless you have 800 CALs you should put in the correct number, else you would be breaking the licensing agreement.
that sucks. is it 2000 advanced, or 2003?
Title says it, 2003

This shouldnt have anything to do with your DHCP server, it sounds like a problem with either the clients or the router that connects them to the internet.

Hmm.. Well, I don't think it's the router, cause some pcs can get out fine. So.. I'm pretty sure its the clients, I was just able to fix one of the pcs, it can now get out on to the interweb, but I'll be damned if I know what I did????? Seriously! It just started working. I went to another problem pc, did the same things I did on the first, and no go:|

Nil, two things. Can they pull up websites using the IP address only and not the URL? Secondly, can you ping either one of the aforementioned through a DOS prompt??

No, they cannot ping or get to any website using the IP address. I thought it might have been the DNS at first to.
This is starting to drive me insane..

I do appreciate all the replies

Found out what the problem was... My firewall had a 100 user license and and when over 100 different ip addresses tried to get out it shut um down. Simple reset of the firewall fixed the problem.
