I have been out of the loop for a while. I have an old Windows 7 Ultimate disc. I am thinking about adding a new drive to an Asus laptop. Asus Laptop did not come with a windows 7 disc. Asus laptop has a windows 7 code for windows 7 home premium. Will my windows ultimate 7 disc work with that code to install the appropriate windows 7 version on my laptop?

I also have a windows 7 home upgrade disc.

lastly, where do I get a windows 7 code nowadays (for a different system)?

The sophistication that you are talking about is Win 10 asset, it was not available with Win 7.

I do no remember how the Win 7 Upgrade, but if you are using a clean SSD and do not lose anything you can give it a try.

In theory the manufacturer should be able to give you and old Win 7 ISO. Unfortunately Asus is Not good in this sort of things.

You try to find one on eBay or Amazon. Then(if you got a cheap one) run to an House of worship of your faith, and pray that what you get is Not deprecate Pirated version. --

Yes, your WIndows 7 Ultimate Key should work on your Asus .. skip the key entry part until later ... Also the Windows 7 Utimate Key activate a Windows 10 Pro install with no problems, as long as the Windows 7 key was a Retail License version

To answer your first question:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows7

Last question, please clarify.
Clarification: completely unrelated to the first inquiry - where do I get a valid windows code for windows 7? I am worried about buying stuff online. I suppose that ebay buyer satisfaction would take care of any invalid or bad keys that might be sold on ebay? Just wondering if there is a reliable and cheap way to get a windows 7 code.

Is windows 10 worth the upgrade? Do you think it would slow run slower on my asus U47A?

Go with a website that almost exclusively sells computer equipment? I'd make recommendations but I'm from the UK so I doubt I can be of much help.

One thing to be aware of is that genuine Windows licences for a given version (such as Windows 7 Home Premium) do not vary by much; in the UK they're normally about £80. Pro goes around £120 IIRC. If you see a licence for a far cheaper price (and I'd even start to suspect if it's £20 less than the average), it's probably not legit.

The U47A does not list Win10 drivers:
https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/U47A/HelpDesk_Download/

On that basis I wouldn't recommend Win10 as you might end up in a situation that the laptop isn't reliable and/or a key component doesn't work correctly. Usually in my experience ASUS provides drivers for Win10 unless there's a reason not to (which might be found in that computer's FAQ page).

The way I read the first post is that you have the OEM key for 7 premium (that came with the laptop), and you have only a disk for 7 ultimate. If you have the code with ultimate, not problem. Otherwise, you would have to pay for the upgrade, which at this point doesn't make much sense IMO. I would run the upgrade to 10 and see how it does for you:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO

You can uninstall and stay with 7 if you don't like it.

I'm confused. Isn't it a downgrade to go from Ultimate to OEM (Premium)? I thought Ultimate was the top tier. I just assumed that if I use the Ultimate disc, the OEM code would just lead it to the Premium install. But I guess thats not correct.

PS: The key for the Ultimate disc is being used on another system.

Ah, so then Ultimate is is use, so that isn't an option anyway.

IIRC, in Windows 7 Ultimate the language packs domain server abilities were the main advantage over other versions. Language packs are all "baked in" to 10, and Microsoft limited domain server abilities to Server versions after that one version of 7.
