I am moving part of a thread from "Power Supplies" to the appropriate forum as I would like to learn more.

The thread began by asking whether a certain power supply would be sufficient for a proposed new build and I included a list of the proposed parts. My current GPU choice is the ASUS MATRIX-HD7970-P-3GD5 Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition. The following was included in one of the replies:

Have you considered actually waiting for the next generation? AMD's next generation cards should be out in a couple of months.

So, my question is, what is AMD coming out with and what options will Asus offer? I am looking at Radeon because my current computer uses an NVidia GPU and I would like an AMD GPU for comparison. I would like an Asus for aesthetic reasons and to match brand parts to other components. Thanks in advance.

If you've waited this long I'm sure you could wait just a few more weeks to see what AMD has to offer. It may also push prices down some on current cards

Internet rumor is that Sept 23 AMD will be announcing their new video card lineup. Hopefully we'll have some benchmarks and prices by that time so I would wait a few weeks to see what happens.

On another note, is the Matrix Platinum even available anymore? When I looked into it a couple months ago it was EOL.

OP the Hawaii GPU is launching soon. the press event is on sep 25th and the retail launch is early - mid Oct.

http://www.brightsideofnews.com/new...h-gpu-codenamed-hawaii-in-hawaii-sept-25.aspx

"We just got confirmation that AMD will be announcing their latest GPU codenamed Hawaii. The event will be scheduled during the week of September 23rd, and there will be a live streamed public event on the 25th that will introduce AMD's new flagship GPU to the world. Some details will be saved for a later date, however, AMD is planning to make an event out of this with some interesting details that include aircraft carriers and some more sneak previews of Battlefield 4.

Yes, let's remember that Battlefield 4 is coming out soon and it looks like AMD's new Hawaii GPU is probably going to be the GPU that it will bundle with. The timing is great for AMD since they'll likely officially launch the GPU and start selling them sometime in early October."

http://semiaccurate.com/2013/08/07/amd-to-launch-hawaii-in-hawaii/

"It looks like new GPUs are coming this fall with AMD’s Hawaii now set for late September. This one is going to change the market mainly because there is no competition for it this year." "Hawaii and the Volcanic Islands family is coming this fall and a late September public show likely means an October silicon launch. This is a massively updated GPU vs the minor tweaks in the last round. Given the timing, Hawaii is unquestionably a 28nm part so no shrink related performance bump but the architectural changes should more than make up for that. It is unlikely to be an incremental advance."

Hawaii is expected to compete with GK110 and prices are expected to be quite aggressive.the price for the Hawaii Pro aka HD 9950 is expected to be USD 450 - 500. so there is no point in buying a Matrix HD 7970 now.

AMD Hawaii, eh? My wife is Hawaiian. Maybe that will help with the convincing. September 25 isn't too long to wait, even though I had hoped to start building this month.

I have found the Asus card in stock, but price has been going up, not down. That's why I am rethinking my choice. I was looking at a less expensive card, but I love the led load lights.

With the current pricing on the 7970 the Matrix is overpriced. Unless you've found a better deal than Newegg.

This Sapphire for $280AR Would be the best deal.

If you want the Asus brand the the regular DCII is $340AR ($100 less then the Matrix) will give you similar looks and the ROG features with the same 4xDP etc... of the Matrix.

Waiting to see what Hawaii offers is still the best advice, IMO.

I've been getting temped by these inexpensive 7970's and 7950's, but I've been doing this long enough to know to wait until AMD's announcement.

Worst case scenario with waiting is that you end up buying the 7970 anyway a few weeks later if the new cards aren't that impressive or overpriced. If you buy now they might end up launching a card for $100-150 more than the 7970 that simply buries it.

Don't forget that Tahiti is going to be close to two years old by the time Hawaii launches, so isn't unreasonable to expect some serious gains. Either way, I doubt the 7-series cards are going to go up in price again.

I agree with waiting. Although, I'm not so sure that Hawaii is going to bury anything, to be honest. It's not like AMD wouldn't hold back trying to improve something, and in the end realize they can't really make it any better and just release it, late and slow. I hope not. I hope it's at least competitive with GK110. You'd think that if they waited this long to release it, it'll be better, right? These latest specs I've seen floating around with 2560sp, if true aren't likely to be over the top performance wise, though.

Unless AMD releases a card for under $280 with 4GB GDDR5 and greater performance than the HD7970, it would make no sense to wait, unless by "wait" you mean "wait for at least 12 months" by which time we might actually see that sort of pricing on whatever they release in the next month for $400 and that's if they even release mid-range next month and they don't jack the prices up to $450+.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. "Wait" meaning until the next release, expected within the next month or so. I don't think I could wait another year, though my wife would definitely disagree.

Maybe if the prices aren't too horrible, new "equivalent" of 7950 could be an option?
