Question for all you driven people

Alright.. So what drives you to be an engineer/doctor/lawyer or anything at all? Why do you want to work tons of hours and do tons of work? Do you enjoy your job that much? Do you enjoy doing math problems, writing huge papers, or all of this stuff?

What drives you to do all this stuff?

I've never understood it. I just want to win the lottery and go out and have fun all the time.

It helps if you tell me what you do too, btw.

driven by a dream of an early retirement which includes a big boat and a house with my own slip on the bay. Also responsibilities of a child.

The money aspect should only be a bonus. I just completed my second year of a four (typically five) year EE program at the University of Manitoba and I'm currently working with the utility right now in Power Quality -- have you ever wondered how much work it takes to keep the lights on? The answer to that question involves the design, construction, operation and maintenance of all kinds of interesting equipment. It's mentally challenging and rewarding to do all of those types of work and it gives you a real sense of accomplishment when something you've been working with is completed, working as intended, and most of all safe. I'm sure its the same for doctors, lawyers and any other type of profession.

Work is sometimes necessary if you know... you want anything to happen. Things have to be done, and some people just feel they have a calling to do something, something they feel is great and needed. And financial motivations play an important role in this process too.

Yep, for all those intense occupations, money is a bonus, and something they use to keep the happiness flowing on the side... but ultimately, it's that challenge/reward principal. Do something difficult, but when you finish something and everything has went to plan, you get a type of high from the chemicals your brain releases. Your body recognizes the stress, and you recognize the stress is all gone and you did well, and if you have basically set yourself up correctly in the mental aspect, your own body heavily rewards you.

because that's pretty much the only way to make money. you generally need money to live...

I'm just passionate about the work I do. It's pretty unstable and doesn't pay extremely well, but I'd rather do it than do anything else, including sitting on my ass all day.

Ambition and desire are not things I have at all.

I do not have ambition or a desire to live with my parents at all. I rather not live with them, but I have no significant feelings toward accomplishing anything in my life that would get me out of here. I could be given the option of getting killed or to continue a college education, and I could flip a coin to decide that... I really don't feel any ambitions in life.

Sitting on your ass all day is not typically enjoyable. I agree with that.

I went and played ultimate (frisbee) today and talked/hanged out in the sun for like 3 and 1/2 hours. That was enjoyable.

Besides the fact that I sorta think you're an idiot, I'll try to respond. I think we were born to be in harness, to give meaning to our lives by DOING something.

1) That's why "poor little rich kids" can often have it so hard, and turn to drugs and dissolution. They have no compelling reason to get up in the morning, no real way to justify their very existence to themselves.

2) THAT'S also part of the reason that big-time lottery winners often ruin their lives within a few short years. Their struggle for existence and security, which they thought they hated, was taken away from them and they become lost without it.

3) OP, you THINK you would like dessert all the time, but in reality, you'd get heartily sick of it.

There is no substitute for the satisfaction of going through lean times to get to the good times, and knowing that it was YOUR hard work and persistence that got you there.

1) That was confusing... I don't know if you were referring to me or not, but I am not a rich kid. I don't really understand that. Don't MOST people believe in some kind of point in existence (religion)? I am on the nihilist and atheist side, and not many people are like that.

2) I have planned out many things in my life and the one thing that tends to always make my life better is having money... It's nice to be able to go out and do things with friends and not have to worry about fucking money. It's nice to not worry about financial problems or anything like that. You can still have a struggle for existence and security even if you are rich... (Rich kids?)

3) All the things I want to do in life require money for the most part.

Probably not, but you can have that if you are in the lottery. You can still do troublesome tasks and come out better.
