Work is sometimes necessary if you know... you want anything to happen. Things have to be done, and some people just feel they have a calling to do something, something they feel is great and needed. And financial motivations play an important role in this process too.

Why do you HAVE TO do something? That's what I don't understand.

because that's pretty much the only way to make money. you generally need money to live...

That's not true at all.

Why do you have to live? Why do you want to live? What makes you feel that you must live?

I want to live because I can. We are lucky enough to have the chance to explore and learn about this beautiful and intricate world around us and I want to take advantage of that chance.

Everybody in this forum has a different motivation to get up in the morning, and that is exactly the reason why life is interesting!

There is no set method on how to be happy; one has to find something that is intrinsically motivating.

I am an atheist myself and I enjoy the freedom of creating my own meaning out of life. I have not even remotely come close to discovering what makes me happy, but it is that very fact that gets me up in the morning.

The moral of the story is: If you are trying to find a specific answer to "How can I be driven?" through ATOT, you will fail miserably.

Well I am an atheist and a nihilist, so it is a bit rougher...

I strongly doubt you're truly a nihilist. You're just a kid looking for a philosophical outlook at appeals to you. Do you truly believe that life has no value?

This. I can nearly guarantee that if you actually get involved in something - travel, a job, studying a subject - you'll change your depressing views. I don't think there's really any "point" to life - I just think that while we're here, we may as well make the best of it. Try new things, meet new people, develop an identity, and find your place in the world. I'm investing myself in studying abroad during college - I have probably the best opportunity to travel around the world that I'll have in my life, and I'm taking advantage of it.

OP you need some self help seminars. Clearly, you have a chemical imbalance or something that prevents you from feeling normal human feelings such as ambition and drive.

I feel sorry for you.

I feel sorry for you.

Pills/true-modifications would probably be the only way I would feel those feelings like everyone else.

EDIT: Just because I use a name to summarize my views does not mean I am just doing whatever appeals. These views come to me through lots of thinking and only later when I tell someone do I ever hear about something such as: "Maybe you're an atheist." or "Oh, so you're a nihilist?" etc... I am not going through wikipedia and reading entries and going, "Hmm, this seems appealing! I must be this now."

IF you truly believe that life has no value, why are you still sponging off your parents instead of enlisting in the Army and going yo Iraq where you could both take other lives as well as putting yours on the line daily?

You come across in most of your posts as a whiny little emo bitch.

Animator, so I enjoy bringing characters to life. Nothing quite like it, even though it can take weeks, I never get over the thrill of seeing a character move for the first time.

This thread pisses me off. When I was younger I was also an emo bitch, and convinced myself for a few short years that I had no purpose and the whole world was meaningless. Now that I am no longer a whiney little teenager that takes everything for granted, I realize that I am given a chance to live on this extremely beautiful earth. It doesn't matter if I have some divine purpose or reason for being here. The fact is, I am here, and it is wonderful that I'm here, and I am going to do as much as I can while I am here. I have a chance to feel love, happiness, ecstasy, and I find every chance to enjoy the little things in life. Yes, it's hard sometimes when I don't want to work or go to class on a sunny day, but I remember that learning about myself and the world around me makes me happy. I do not believe in god or follow any religion, either, but I love finding the beauty in other people and the world everyday. And when I am unable to see the beauty, when all I see is a greedy, sad world, I feel compassion and a great urge to help those that do not have the opportunities that i do. I am a very poor college student that doesn't have much money to spend on myself, either, but I still want to learn about my world by traveling, and I want to help others as best as I can. I know if I keep trying at life I will be able to do those things someday.

I hope you find some way to grow out of your teen angst and realize how much time you're wasting.

I've never understood it. I just want to win the lottery and go out and have fun all the time.

What drives me is understanding math well enough to know that I'm not going to win the lottery.

Just because the odds are bad doesn't mean you can't win.

The idea that there is a greater purpose for life goes against ideas of atheism though. A greater purpose means there is a reason why we are here, etc. That reason usually is because of something such as a god... I highly doubt I'll change my views. I might be happier and in a better state, but I will always believe there is truly no purpose in life. I will live life happier and not think about the pointlessness because I will be occupied with something, but I will always believe this.

These kinds of things don't really affect me or come to my mind when I am happy and occupied with stuff. (I don't think how life is so pointless when I am playing Ultimate)

Because I enjoy being accomplished and not a drain on society. It also helps me sleep at night knowing I'm better than you.

You have to define what makes you better.

You're full of shit! Just recently you have posted about how much fun you're having dancing and playing frisbee, then you claim life has no value? You're either a troll or a little emo bitch.

No matter how you look at life, there are reasons to live a fulfilling existence. If you believe in a highe power, then it is your duty to live your life to the fullest. If you don't believe in any higher power, then your life is completely yours. You can do whatever you want. There will be no ultimate judgment. If you sit on your ass your entire life, nobody will care. If you cure cancer, nobody will care. That puts all the power in your hands because the life you choose to lead will be your choice alone. There will be nothing compelling your decisions.

Anyway OP, it sounds like you need to talk to someone. You need to figure out why you have this inertia in your life. And you need to overcome it.

Yeah, I can have fun and still believe that. You can believe life has no purpose or value, but you can still release some chemicals and have a blast... I am going dancing tonight to help forget about how pointless life is.

Maybe you should familiarize yourself with nihilism. Just because you believe life has no value or purpose doesn't mean you can't still have fun...
