Just bring a visa to be safe. That's pretty much excepted everywhere, unless it's a store that does not take credit cards. when I'm not sure I always bring both my credit card and debit card. Stores get charged a percentage for credit card transactions so some choose to not accept them as they'll lose money when a customer uses it. Especially smaller establishments. I'd say 99% of places I go to DO accept them though.

The ugly step child with nice 0% balance transfer (no fee) and 5% cash back.

Visa > MasterCard > Amex > Discover > Diners Club > Whatever else > Burger King GC's

PenFed doesn't charge foreign transaction fees on their Platinum Rewards credit card.

Well I'm back from the trip and carrying cash is a giant pain in the ass as I expected. Even had to go inside to pay for gas for the car! The horror. Only 4 places in 10 days accepted Discover. I'm going to apply for a Capital One Visa but not activate it until another trip. But can I leave it pending like that for maybe years?

In other news, the amusement & water parks inside the West Edmonton Mall were a huge hit with the kids. And Lake Louise is still beautiful as always.
