I was born in the USA but chose to acquire my Italian citizenship for patriotic reasons. Citizens of other countries descended from an ancestor born in Italy may apply for Italian citizenship by claim of descent. In my case, my parents were born in Italy but immigrated to USA where I was born.

Are you using your UK passport to get into the UK on a flight directly from the US after leaving the US with your American pasport?

Yes, that's what I've been doing for about 20 years. Neither the US nor UK check passports on the way out. The airlines only check to make sure I'll be able to get in the country I'm flying to. If the UK started requiting visas from Americans, then I guess I would show my UK passport to the airline.
