hi, i own a t41 1.4 ghz and was wondering...ibm has its own battery management software and so does windows..both run on mine at the same time..did anyone decide to disable one or the other or is everyone just letting both run at the same time...anyone also notice that it takes a long time for the computer to load windows completely..norton is such a resource hog..i might get rid of that so windows loads quicker...any suggestions to increase performance?

I haven't touched the Windows power management settings - the IBM Battery Maximizer software pretty much coexists peacefully with Windows. All it really does is change the Windows settings.

As to booting - yes, the IBM preload makes for a slow boot. I ditched the included NortonAV and loaded Norton AV Corporate 7.60.926. The stripped down corporate client loads quickly. I also got rid of the IBM Message Center and DLA.

The only things I did keep were Battery Maximizer (has more options than the Windows power management) and Access Connctions (I change between 2 or 3 networks with different security settings & encryption so this comes in handy).

My advice would be to hit START->RUN->and run 'msconfig' to see what your startup sequence is. Get rid of stuff that you don't need or uncheck it in the 'msconfig' window.

Wipe the HDD and do a fresh install. IBM has all the drivers you'll need on their website.

Better yet, buy a 7200 PRM HDD and do a fresh install on that. The difference is amazing.

I did a clean install twice

I loaded the apps that IBM has:
UltraNAV, Battery Maximizer, Access Connections, etc. I don't remember the whole list. (I like IBM access connections) It was painfully slow, so I restored to an image with the drivers adn IBM programs, but no other apps. Then I added Access connections, kerio and speedswitchXP). No help. Still slow.

basically, Win boot is about 30 sec, but then it takes Kerio another 90 secs to load and then another MINUTE or more to get the wireless screen to come up to connect to the router. Where did I go wrong? I already optimized with bootvis.
Norton isn't even on at this point.

Can anyone make a LIST of the minimum things to load? I have another image with only win on it I can restore to. I'd like to clear it up so that I can load my apps and actually _use_ it!! Thanks

Are you only loading the audio/video drivers and win updates and ditching the rest?
If I don't load ultranav, will I be able to configure the touchpad settings? That's loading at boot.

But bootvis says all that's done by 30 seconds.

Why is Kerio takign so long? Why is the Access Connection/wireless card taking so long to be found?
I can post my Bootvis summary if anyone can interpret it.

I ended up doing fresh installs twice also like you. I ended up loading the default image and then just unistalled what I don't need. This runs pretty good just the way it is. The only other apps I installed was PowerDVD, Office 2k3, Nero, and Dreamweaver.

IBM mini PCI card wireless drivers cannot boot properly without WZC set to start on boot. It will take minutes to load the networking if WZC is disabled at boot. Have you disabled WZC? If so, set it to start on boot (automatic) and then disable it once you are fully booted. I put a services icon on my desktop to make this quick. It's a pain, but IBM's wireless card cannot boot fast without WZC, yet run like crap when WZC is enabled.

If that's not it, you did not intall your IBM utilities in the correct order or have an incorrect utility version running with another incorrect version of utility. Go back to IBM's website and carefully read the info on every utility. Also, you MUST load the ACPI drivers and SMbus drivers.

And IBM has a specific order in which utilities must be installed... so be careful to read about the right order, and compatable versions.

The apps I have load are Thinkpad Config Manager, UltraNav, Bat MaxiMizer, Hotkey app (give me my onscreen stuff) and Access connections,

Also realize that if you have a 4200 RPM HDD, it's going to be slow no matter what you do. To me, it's VERY much worth it to spring for the 7200 RPM Hitachi drive. It really makes all the difference in the world.

that is actually my exact problem of why my bootup is so slow..i disabled the wzc ...once i enabled it..my boot up is now decent...but too bad i have a flakey connection again..going to dl the new update to access connections that just came out and see if that helps...it would be a pain in the ass if i had to disable wzc every time..anyone come up a solution to the intel wireless problem..thanks

UPDATE:
i just installed the newest access connections released 4-7-04...enabled wzc...i did not remove the intel proset wireless 7.2.0 i previously installed ..and now i have a faster boot up and a stable connection without disabling wzc...the only problem i saw was that it seemed like i had two intel prosets running in my startup box..the 7.2.0 i had and i guess the one that comes with access connection..but i just exited the 7.2.0 one and it doesnt show up in my startup even though its running..im too afraid to remove it...in case that is the reason why my connection is stable...thanks for all the help...if anyone just dled the newest access connections and have a stable connection who didnt before without the intel proset 7.2.0 pls let me know..thanks

I have that version. Although it does not drop the connection with the wireless AP, WZC STILL causes huge pings every minute or so for five seconds and sometimes a few lost packets. Disabling WZC after boot stops this.

This is both IBM's and Window's fault. WZC is crappy, and IBM's drivers rely on WZC to boot. The pings are caused by WZC regularly checking for new APs and there is no way to tell it not to, other than shutting it down after boot.

So I made a shortcut on my desktop that goes directly to the admin services. It makes shutting down WZC fairly painless after booting.

With any other driver set, one would simply download the W2K drivers for the wireless client and turn off WZC completely. However, IBM's drivers are universal for XP and W2K, so we're screwed. :|

I'm fairly new with all this stuff. I was wondering if it was possible for someone to run msconfig and list all the startup entries and define what they are for? I have so many things under startup and I have no idea whether I need them or not.

Thanks

it looks like the intel proset is just a connection manager - like IBM Access Connections (=IBM--AC). I prefer the IBM--AC interface. Is there some reason I'd want to run teh Intel proset with IBM--AC or instead of it?
