My husband and I received an invitation to a holiday party at a nice hotel. My husband owns nothing but t shirts and jeans. (he is an IT guy )

Anyway, should he buy a tux or would a suit and tie be acceptable?

Thanks in advance.

Formal would be fine with just dress shirt, tie, nice pants, etc. Add in a sport coat depending on the location and weather.

Well he wouldn't have to buy a tux, a rental would do. Cheaper then buying a nice suit if he'll never wear it.

I'd still say suit though.

Formal means a suit. Black tie means tux. Don't get a tux unless it specifically says it...been there, done that, spent the whole night with people calling me Bond...James Bond.

I'd think something like a business suit would do. Navy Blazer/Sunday clothes would probably be pushing it.

A tux might be called for, depends on the nature of the party. That said you can never be too overdressed when the invitation says "formal". A tux would be a safe bet, and if he's slightly overdressed at worst it'll be a conversation starter.

Thanks for the responses guys! We are in Phoenix, so the weather that night should be between 60-50 degrees.
Does a particular color matter at all?

So you had an excuse to make out with the nearest hot single chick and didn't go for it? Fail.

I'd wear black unless you wanna differentiate yourself.

If you are planning on getting just one suit, I'd go with charcoal personally.

Formal and night = dark color. Black, navy or charcoal.

So, I guess he should skip the powder blue, with a pink ruffled shirt then?

oh, I was only referring to the event itself. If you are only going to buy/have one suit, I'd agree with charcoal

Yes, that's suitable only for daytime weddings, strip club bands and presidential inaugurations.

Black would definitely work, though.

Everyone here (except perhaps for the OP) is an unwashed heathen!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formal_attire

Showing up to an event requiring Formal Attire wearing a "business suit" == Massive FAIL

Although, if the person hosting the event is similarly barbaric, perhaps a "business suit" wouldn't been entirely out of place. Of course, neither would a tuxedo t-shirt, or 40s of malt liquor....

In common practice, formal =/= black tie
