question for the linux users who are dual booting..

do you have to reset your computer in order to switch back and forth between win2k and nix?

I had a dual boot before the HDD on my laptop died, and yes, I did reset between Windows and Linux. However, the only dual boot I have now is on my PowerMac (see sig). This is a special case.

If I boot into MacOS, I can use an Extension called BootX to get into Linux without rebooting the system. But if I am in Linux, I have to reset to get back to MacOS.

What did you expect? I mean, it's not like you press a key and the other OS takes over.

If you wanted that you could always buy one of those million dollar machines from IBM that run multiple OSs simulataneously. OR you could just run VMware on your PC.

the reason i wanted to know this is, linux users are always boasting about their uptimes. so this answers my theory that linux users are always rebooting back and forth, so they can't really have an uptime.

Umm, many of us don't need to reboot into Windows for anything or have seperate machines for the few Windows-only tasks.

two of my machines at work:

9:24am up 152 days, 14:35, 1 user, load average: 2.04, 2.27, 2.41
9:25:38 up 142 days, 15:37, 3 users, load average: 0.17, 0.20, 0.39

The newest version of VMWARE simply rocks! I run Win2k Pro(host), Linux Mandrake, and Win2k Server at the same time I love not having to reboot to switch OS'es. There is hardly any performance difference when running the OS in a VM.

I run Win2k Pro as my main OS, play with Win2k Server for my MCSE studies, and play around with Linux to learn it in my spare time.

VMWare does kick ass, if you can afford the price tag.

I run linux exclusively on two of my 3 comps. The only time I ever have to reboot is to install a new kernel, and I don't do that unless there's a new patch to fix a problem I have.

I also agree that VMware is a truly great thing. Without it, I would have to *gasp* reboot once in awhile!
