Question for X1900XT/XTX owners

Hi Guys,

I'm running a Dell 2405FPW and a Nvidia 7800 GTX (256) and I'm finding that although World of Warcraft is playable it could be a bit smoother in some zones like Wetlands or STV (I have to admit I do run all the eye candy i.e. 16AF, 4AA MS)

I am seriously thinking of purchasing a new X1900XTX to help speed things up but I cannot see any World of Warcraft benches anywhere, is there anyone out there that has both WOW and a X1900XT/XTX that can give me an idea of how it will run?

PS I have tried SLI but there was no performance increase at all in WOW.

I haven't seen very many WoW benchmarks for the X1900 XT/X so I'm not sure what kind (if any) performance boost you'd see. All I can say is give it a try and see what you think - you can pick up an X1900 card at a local brick and mortar store like Frys.

I am running a X1900XT and play WOW @ 1920x1200 on a 2405 with evey thing maxxed out. That includes 16x AA, Full Ansio, etc..

I haven't had any slow downs at all, everything runs like silk.

(this is being a driven by an 4800 X2 with 2 GB of ram BTW)

I ran that rez on a 6800GT without issue.

In this particular scenario an upgrade really isn't going to do much for you. I thought WoW was CPU limited anyways, but I haven't touched that game in a year so I could be wrong.

I'd recommend waiting for the G71 (7900GTX) to come out and deciding which is better between it and the X1900XT. With the introduction of the G71 in a mere 5-6 weeks time, it just makes sense to wait and grab the best bang between the two cards. I don't think the X1900XTX is worth the $100 price bump, though some have said the X1900XTX cores might overclock better.

At those resolutions and with the settings the OP had and no slow down on a 6800GT? I highly doubt it.

I did and it was well worth it.

Second that. That's what I did too. Well worth my update. I can now play games like FEAR and COD2 @1600x1200 with 4AA/16AF. Both performance + IQ is amazing...

I play EverQuest 2 at 1920x1200 with 4x AA and 8x HQ AF and it plays fine. I've got a lot of the graphics options maxed out too, like texture resolution, so any of the high-end cards will handle the renderer in WoW's client just fine. Games like these, though, with lots of uneven floor surfaces really benefit from the high quality AF in the new Radeons, at least for those with an eye for texture quality.

If you decide to purchase the X1900 go for the XT because soon you are going to be able to flash the bios to xtx and you can OC it that far when the propper drivers come out for it. On other forums people have done it the unhealthy way.

It's not so much buyging the card for WoW as it is buying it for other games, but getting addicted to WoW and not playing anything else.

AA isn't really necessary at that high of a resolution. It's almost unnoticeable at 1600x1200 for me. I easily run WoW at 1600x1200 with every option turned on and maxed out with a X850XT, just no AA, and it runs at 60FPS unless I'm in a major city along with half of the other players on the server.

What size is your monitor? I definetely notice a lack of AA on my 2405fpw at it's native resolution.

Ditto, I could see this if you're running a 15" CRT at 1600x1200, but not on my 1680x1050 LCD... No AA sucks.

A single GTX 256 or X1800XT will run WoW with everything cranked @ 1680x1050 though, I couldn't imagine that a GTX would have issues on a Dell 2405FPW. I just rolled a new character on a new server, that took care of any lag issues I ever had. I think most issues with WoW are either on the server or network, and not the end user's video card. Not a lot of benchmarks available for WoW simply because it is difficult to reproduce the same situation multiple times for consistency.

21". Sure I notice it, but it definately isn't needed.

I read somewhere there is a problem in EQ2 with using AA and ATI Radeon cards?

Found reference to it here

this still an issue anyone is aware of?

Here is what I was thinking of in reference to EQ2 and AA issues ... (note article date is Tuesday , January 24, 2006)

We found another bug with EverQuest II and enabling Antialiasing. This is a very well known bug and ATI is working on a fix. In the past with Catalyst 5.12 and earlier, we had to put in an EQ2.INI file that had the command ?r_aa_blit 1?. This allowed AA to function on all ATI cards. However, with the beta driver we used for testing, this did not work. We were not able to get AA working in EverQuest II. ATI is working on the problem.
