I wanted to ask folks here using an AMD X6 what kind of FPS they were getting when they encode video for something like an ipod. My old X3 720BE at 3.4Ghz was getting about 110 FPS on standard definition video using the free Mediacoder app. Thanks.

And to add to that question, which free programs actually utilize all 6 cores? I've been resorting to running multiple instances to use all my cores.

LOL, I bet the engineers were thinking the same thing when they made x6.. hahaha:biggrin::biggrin:

Then they thought,, well we gotta sell them something,, it might as well be almost completely useless,, almost,, that is,,, but not completely,, well,, it might be

There are PLENTY of apps that use all 6 cores.

Changing from Winrar to 7zip 9.20 64bit with LZMA2 on 8 threads its a good start.

x264, 2 passes. 1st used 30-50% of my x6, the 2nd pass uses 100%

if i go by constant quantizer then 70-80%

If you REALLY want all the cores used you won't do better than avi.net. For some reason the core scaling on that free software is better than I've ever seen.

You really should have oc'd that 720 though op, I'm closer to 170-180 range with an x3 @ 3.7+ghz.

It can probably go that high but I never bothered to go past 3.4Ghz because it would need extra voltage. Still got it so I might play around with it.

depends on the source, and the encoding settings obviously

some 1080p sources can be encoded to 720p in better than realtime speeds, whereas others are around 15fps. to be fair, i do use avisynth filters which impacts a bit and i can't be bothered using MT mode

ok, ok, ok.... I have a tested this.... I oc'd my i7-860 to 3.4gz.... and my AMD-x6 to 3.8ghz..... I know 4core with HT, and 6core..... I encoded the same movie on both systems, and the 6core encoded the HD movie 15minutes faster than the i7..... so, 4hours, and 4hours and 15 minutes..... no big deal.

And yeah, most encoding/transcoding programs I've seen use all the processing/processor cores they can get there hands on...

If your looking into buying a new processor soon, look into the i7-2xxx, There won't be much immediate benefit, but apparently the software will need to be modified to utilized the video cores to allow much faster transcoding... its what I read, and im hoping, I'll be watching before I get a new processor.

FPS changes a lot depending on source material and output material. give a specific input file, specific output settings, and we'll compare.

I'm encoding MKV files with subs to mp4 files for my ipod touch using the rig in my sig. Mostly anime at either 480 or 720p with the 480 getting 340+ FPS and 720 about 250 FPS. This breaks down to a 24 minute MKV being encoded in less than two minutes.

well arent you special.

my encodes are generally at 110-120 fps. in fact, amagami just finished, so i need to encode that. i'll do that now. 720p source, 330-350 mb/episode.

I watched that one too. Not bad but Durarara is my fave this year so far.
