Question of ethics: What would you have done?

So, today I was going to go for a small drive in my summer car. I pull into the gas station, and tell the lady to give me $10 of premium. I live in Oregon, so all gas stations are full service. The tank is completely empty, but I was only planning on driving ~40 miles anyway, so all I needed was around 2 1/2 gallons.

About two minutes later, I look over at the pump, wondering why it wasn't done filling up yet. Low and behold, instead of charging me $3.19/gal, I was being charged $.319 a gallon. I got ~9 gallons for $2.89. The gas lady looked at the price, then proceded to top my tank off. She told me to pay her $3, and that I should get out of there before someone figures out what happened.

So I left.

What would you have done?

She told you to just pay the $3? Then just pay the $3. Clearly she was aware of the problem and didn't mind taking the loss on one person.

Now, if it hadn't been full service, and if you had just "discovered" that a pump had Premium at $0.319...that would be different.

Sounds like their trick of adding 9/10ths of a penny finally caught up to them:laugh:

I did do them the favor of not calling everyone I know and telling them about the problem. I just drove away, although I had a very strong urge to get my other car and fill it up for <$2.00!

Shouldn't this be in Hot Deals?

Seriously, I'd have just taken my $3 of gas and left. Maybe given her the ten with $7 as a tip for not changing the price and making me pay $30!

There's a good chance the mistake will come out of her paycheck. I'd have paid her the right amount.

Probably one of those gas stations that was ordered to sell gas ultra cheap for a day to make up for customers they had previously ripped-off.

I would have spit in her face and drove off. :|

err... j/k, don't kill me.

I'd have paid for the amount of gas I received at the normal price. It's not like I'm never going to use that gas (which is why I always fill up, I never ask for just $10 worth).

Oregon and New Jersey do not permit self-service gas stations. Prices are often a couple cents higher than neighboring states, but not always. Too many regional differences in price to compare accurately.

OP, I'd have just asked her to go ahead and fill it up, and given her a nice tip...

WENEEDLIGHT, no. Tipping at full serve stations is not necessary. But then again, neither is most of the tipping that goes on in this country...
