Question on installing Win2k AD on non-DDNS aware system

Hello all,
I want to install Win2k adv. serv. with AD into a test environment, that is on it's own VLAN (not isolated). The DNS servers are not dynamic, so I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on the route I plan to take.

I was going to create a sub-zone (is this the correct term?), called win2k.primarydnszone.com and have that zone forward any request it can't handle to the company's DNS servers. I am not 100% sure on the specifics on how to create it, and the pros/cons, which is something I could also use some advice on.

I also plan on installing Exchange 2k into this environment. We already have an exchange resource domain. What are the shortcomings to having an OU instead of a domain for this resource domain?

Thank you all very much for your time!

Dynamic DNS is not a requirement for Active Directory. A DNS server that supports SRV records is, however. I can't remember the RFC for SRV records off the top of my head, but google for it, and make sure that your DNS servers support it.

Dynamic registrations and incremental zone transfers are nice, but not necessary to the proper operation of AD.

Thanks for the reply...

Everywhere I read it states that DDNS is a requirement. Now, I know there are other ways around it. If win2k detects you don't have DDNS, it will ask you if you want the entries exported to a manual.dns file, which you can then have your DNS admins plug into DNS. My goal was to create a sub-zone (and I know I'm not referring to it by the correct term) so that my DDNS server will service DNS registration requests, but all other requests get forwarded to the main DNS servers.

Was this more clear? I am sorry if I was too vague earlier. Thank you, once again, for your reply.

Everything you have read is wrong.

DDNS is NOT a requirement for AD...trust me. It is not even turned on by default.
Your plan, however, is fine. In fact, the admins who run the corporate DNS servers would probably appreciate it very much if you didn't throw all your SRV records into their zones. You have to get the corporate admins to delegate the child zone to your server(s). Your zone (from your example) would be win2k.primarydnszone.com, and the corporate zone is primarydnszone.com. The corporate admins create a folder in the primarydnszone.com zone called win2k, and delegate it to your DNS server.

But DDNS is not necessary....
