Question on SATA

Since SATA doesn't have a master slave setting. How is boot order determined?

I ask because I am going to setup my new system, I have 4 drives. 2 Standard IDE drives and 2 SATA. For the SATA drives I have 1 Raptor and 1 Seagate Barracuda.

I want the Raptor to be the boot drive for the system, but there is no way to have the system boot from the Raptor that I can see (have not tried to install XP). Anyone got some info on how I can make sure the Raptor is the boot disk I install the OS to?

If I take all the drives down cept for the Raptor, install the OS, then hook them all back up will that determin the boot drive?

Thanks.

Sata controllers are numbered. you'll have Sata 1 and a Sata 2. 1 would be considered the master. for bootup, i'm fairly certian Sata drives are checked first for an OS. for my bootup, i just have HDD 0 selected and i boot from my sata drive (but i do not have any IDE HHD, only opticals...)

There is no master-slave concept on SATA, since you can have only one drive per cable. The "master" controller (which is IN THE DRIVE, remember that folks!) can hardly take control of another drive the way it would on PATA.

Boot order is sorted out through the BIOS. In modern BIOSes, detection order is nothing to do with resulting drive numbering.
Shuffle the device list such that your preferred boot device appears 1st in the list.

As long as there is only 1 bootable drive it won't matter which order it is in as long as it in enabled...

Somebody forgot to tell Intel and Asus <g>. I always said I wuz gonna remain a SCSI guy unless 3 things changed:

1. I don't want to be able to plug in a HD cable backwards.
2. I want IDE (SATA) performance to approach that of 15k SCSI drives.
3. I don't wanna hear nuthin about Master / Slave.

Well we still ain't quite got No. 2 but imagine my initial surprise when I read this.

Asus P5AD2-E Overview

Go to Downloads Link and +Select manual (PDF) (woulda posted direct link but Asus server down.

The following quotes and table quoted from Asus P5AD2-E Manual Page 2-26 & 27

Serial ATA Connectors (7-pin SATA1 [red], SATA2 [red], SATA3 [black], SATA4 [black])

"Serial ATA Hard Drive Disk Configuration:

Connector Color Setting Use
SATA1/SATA2 Red Master BootDisk
SATA3/SATA4 Black Slave Data Disk"

After digging deeper, essentially what it means, to my understanding, is that you can actually now set SATA drives to run as "standard IDE" via certain controllers so all the ole designations will linger.

So I guess the Master / Slave concept is still with is even with SATA hard drives and cables, at least when running them in witha SATA controller in legacy mode. Still wish they woulda used different nomenclature. Thought I was gonna be able to take that S & M (Slave / master) stuff outta my puter vocabulary.

Only 1 Drive can be connected per SATA cable so the boot order that is refered to is by the SATA hookup/connector...Master/Slave reference is when 2 Drives are via one port/connect...and even then the Drives have jumpers to determine their position.
