Are you running the GUI or Command Line version of 3.0?

Either way, that time does seem slow for that speed. If you're running the GUI make sure you either set the screensaver to "blank screen" under the Seti@Home screensaver properties. That or just turn off the screensaver all together or set it to "blank screen" as the screensaver instead of Seti@Home.

Are you running NT/Win2K? Are you running 2 versions of the client (2 at once)?

I've got to defer here... I know you can install SETI as a service under WinNT/Win2K and using the command line version you can install them in different directories and with switches point each client to a specific CPU. I don't have a dualie box so I can't help much more than to say it's possible to run 2 clients hidden under NT/2000.

Just did a search... Check this thread and see office boy's post 3 from the top. That should help you get it installed as a service.

I couldn't find anything on running 2 clients on a dualie and I can't remember the switch to direct the client to a specific CPU. But to answer your question, no it will not slow you down anymore than a single client on a single CPU. I did have a dualie a while back and didn't notice any impact running 2 clients under Win2000Pro. The cool thing is, even when gaming one of the CPU's always spent 100% on SETI while the other was handling the gaming part. Only lost 50% of analysis instead of the near 100% you lose when gaming on a single CPU box.

This page has some info on how to run two instances of SETI. If it does not help just bump this thread to the top until someone gives you an answer.

OK - here goes:
3 different directories: 2 for each instance of SAH cli, and one for setiQ
Put these directories in the program files folder. I am going to assume you're using win2k pro. Name them SetiA, SetiB and SetiQ. Copy one instance of the .exe file in to SetiA and SetiB. Extract the SetiQ zip into the SetiQ folder. Run the .exe. Close the app. The default setup for setiQ will hold you over until you can read the FAQ concerning what the settings do, so you can modify later.

Run the .exe files in the setiA&B folders, using the email address you need to keep your account in order - be sure it's registered to Team Anandtech - this will get all the files set up. Shut down the apps. Go into the A & B directories and change the name for the .exe application file to SetiA and SetiB. This will make your life much easier later.

Open a dos box, cd your way to your SetiQ folder. Run setipatc.
Off the top of my head, I think the way it should read is:

setipatc "c:\program files\setiA\setiA.exe"
setipatc "c:\program files\setiB\setiB.exe"

close the dos box, and using the "my computer" icon, get your way back to the A & B & Q directories. Run the apps from these boxes, first A, then B, then Q. You should be good to go. No need to use cpu switches, win2k handles distribution really well.

From here, I have also use a program called HideIt to hide the boxes in the task bar. I also installed one instance of SetiSpy in A & B to monitor the SAH app. I have also made shortcuts to all of these apps on the desktop to get running again in the event of a reboot.

I invite all Armada members to comment on this post to check for mistakes, and maybe to point to links for the SetiQ FAQ, HideIt, and anything else.

Lenny

Found a glitch in the setipatc path - the program files folder is in the c: root - I've corrected it.

Looks good ,BTW another way to get the SETI clients to point to SETIQ is to use the LAN cards IP address ,I believe that entering local host can also work ,anyone else expand on that?

I don't have a network, I'm just using setiQ on one machine. I don't know much about a multiple machine setiQ setup -------

AFAIK if you don't have a NIC in the machine, then you need to patch the client when using SETIQ. If you do have a NIC, then use the NIC's IP address at port 5512 as the proxy server for the SETI client.

York1, do you still have any questions at anyone hasn't answered?

I am now running Seti on a PIII-450 dualie running NT server. All I did was copy the commandline exe to two different directories and ran them from there. With the Task Manager's Performance tab up (the one with the CPU usage graphs) running one instance of CL Seti v3 would make both CPUs at 50%. Running 2 instances ran them both at 100%. I didn't use the cpu argument at all. Is there a performance advantage to using the cpu argument? I seem to be getting WU times from that box the same as my other single CPU PIII-450s, just twice as many of them.

York1, don't bother running it as a service unless for some reason you need SETI 100% hidden. Just use SETILog and the /h switch to run the CLI hidden. Make sure you run two instances though, so both CPUs are used.

You may want to take a look at this it may solve your problem.

Or this ---- from the Seti FAQ

I want to run the text-client as a service in NT - how do I do
that?

Method nr.1

You need to be administrator to do it. The easiest way is if you
have IE4 or IE5 and Task Scheduler. It comes with IE5 and is an
option in IE4. Set up a task to run when your PC boots to launch
it. When you boot your PC, let it sit at the logon screen for 30
seconds or so to verify the Task Scheduler service has started
and it has launched the task. Now it will run in the background
and the only way to stop it is with kill.exe from the NT resource
kit.

If you don't have IE4/5, then use the Schedule Service built into
NT, but you have to be an administrator to do this. Make sure it
is set to run and log on as you. Then schedule it to run in about
2 minutes using the AT command. Type AT /? from a command prompt
for help. You do NOT want to use the /interactive switch. It will
then run in the background. This is easier to use if you have the
Resource Kit as well because you could use the SOON.EXE command
in a batch file in your startup group.

Method nr.2 provided by Peter Yackel:

You need two files from the NT resource kit: srvany.exe and
instsrv.exe. You'll use these files to install SETI as a service.
Here's the procedure:
Copy srvany.exe to the SETI@home directory. (I'll use c:\seti
in this example. I also assume the seti executable to have
been renamed to seti.exe)

Copy instsrv.exe to the winnt directory.
Click Start, Run, and type "cmd" to open a DOS window.
Type: instsrv SETI c:\seti\srvany.exe
Type "exit" to return to NT
Click Start, Run, and type "regedit"
Go to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

Expand it by clicking the +

Highlight SETI, then right click and select New, Key

Type: Parameters

Highlight Parameters, right click and add the following New
String Values Names:

Application
AppDirectory

Now double-click the Application value name you just created
and enter the following Value Data:

c:\seti\seti.exe

Do the same for AppDirectory but enter c:\seti for the Value
Data.

Exit the Registry Editor.

Go to Control Panel and double-click Services.

Go to SETI and double-click on it.

Set the startup to Automatic.
