Question on the Movie/Series James Cavell's Shogun

I recently had an arguement with a friend on the movie and mini-series Shogun (1980). I am under the impression that the Movie (125mins) was a subset of the Series. I checked IMDB but it didn't help because it doesn't tell the length of the series, just says that it has ten 60-minute episodes. In addition, I don't know what the TV-commercial culture was at that time, how many minutes commercials for 1 hour episode. Does anyone know anything about this?

I also am just curious... did they make a movie first and decide to continue a series from there? Or did they make the movie and the mini-series separately? Just curious. Thanks.

Yep, series first (after the book of course) then it was hacked to bits for the movie.

Just like how the Wolf With Cub series was butchered down to the "Shogun Assassin" movie for Americans.

I recall some of it;
it was good,especially after the boat burned.

Then they knew they were stuck there.

SOME of the story is based on history.
