Question RE: Integrated Graphics

Is it possible to enable both the integrated graphics on my i5 2500k cpu and have my video card running so that I can utilize a second display? I ask because when I download the drivers to allow for the on board graphics to work my computer tells me that the integrated graphics has been shut off.

Reason for this question is that my MB has a VGA port from which I can plug my old monitor into, and my graphics card does not. My GPU can support multiple displays on it's own so it isn't overly important that it work. I was more or less just messing around one day, saw my old monitor, and wanted to plug it into my rig.

I think it's possible. You probably need to change a setting in the BIOS to enable both integrated and discrete graphics at the same time.

If that doesn't work, there are DVI to VGA adapters - though they only work if your video card is putting out a VGA signal through the DVI port. (There are pins for that.) Your card might even have come with one.

Some H67 motherboard can do it. But most motherboard, as soon as you install a video card, the integrated one gets turned off.

Any Sandy Bridge board should be able to run the IGP and a discrete GPU at the same time. What exact model do you have?

Seriously?

That's hot. I would assume that they are discrete units, so anything hooked up to the HDMI on my mobo would only run off the intel 3000, and wouldn't utilize my 6970.

Not to threadjack, but I had been wondering something similar for a week or so, and this is an excellent way to get an answer.

I have a 2500k and a gigabyte z68xp-ud3. If I can use my tv as a second display and just kick movies over to it, that would be boss. Bonus points if it doesn't make me want to scream with the number of steps or difficulty in getting it set up.

Depends on the chipset on the motherboard and probably also the exact brand and model. I think on the Ivy Bridge motherboards the integrated graphics is always on. However, it probably depends how the manufacturer engineered the specific motherboard. They were claiming for a while that they could run 3 monitors.

This is theoretically possible. However, will it eat up more processor resources and slow down your Game playing?

OP, in the event that all this doesn't pan out. I will send you a DVI-VGA adapter for the cost of shipping (or you can order it on monoprice for $10 or less).

That is correct, the HDMI on your motherboard will be powered by the IGP and won't utilize your GPU. Obviously for movies and whatnot, it doesn't really matter how much GPU horsepower you have driving the display.

For your GA-Z68XP-UD3, go into the BIOS to Advanced Options -> Onboard VGA and make sure it is set to Always Enable (see page 49 of the manual). Then boot into Windows, install the Intel IGP drivers, and you should be good to go. The TV will work like any other multi-monitor config in Windows.

Excellent... I was not aware of this feature, this is very good news. Thanks.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll try messing with the bios.

My MoBo is a Asus z68, and GPU is a 7970.
