Question regarding a Power Supply and a PC.

Hello! I have been using a 'Corsair VS650' Power Supply which has been installed in newly built PC (Mid-ranged Gaming). I didn't know that was a crappy Power Supply. I have been using it for 3 weeks but no issues found though. Many of the forums say it was not a good Power Supply.

And my question is will it cause any unusual/unclean power flow and degrade any components in my PC? I ordered a 'Corsair RM750x' which is a good one, of course. I am afraid and worried if it will cause any harm to my components. Will everything be alright? No worries?

Thanks in advance.

The main problem with weaker quality power supplies is they last a shorter amount of time. The VS series is not so bad that it would damage your parts, but it does use low quality capacitors which don't last very long. I would advise not using a VS series unit for more than 1-2 years beyond its warranty length (3 years), just to be sure; and to never stress the unit anywhere close to its maximum capacity. The advantage with a unit like RMx is you get 10 year warranty and the PSU will likely be fine even a few years after that. (Of course, there are other advantages too, like tighter voltage regulation, better efficiency and modular cables.)

I generally believe most PC enthusiasts way overbuild their systems. Manufacturers have to make money somehow so advertising more and more features is the way to do it.

This feature creep can be a good or it can unnecessary (where people spend money on features that they don't actually need). When it comes to power supplies we have, thankfully, moved far away from the bad old days when PSUs were often really terrible. So this feature creep has greatly improved power supply quality to where most name brand PSUs are pretty good. That is, the name brands of companies a typical PC enthusiast might purchase from. I trust most of those companies to do the job of ensuring the PSUs they source from a company you may not have heard of are actually good.

What I'm getting at is the VS650 is a fine power supply. Keep it in its most efficient power band, roughly 25-50% and you'll have an efficient, low-noise PSU that will work fine.

Just don't, like lehtv said, stress the PSU and you'll be fine. Typical computer usage is probably not going to be a problem.

As to causing damage, I've had one PSU - a terrible and cheap 300 Watt unit I bought around 1999 that had difficulty booting the system. No long term damage but it's the last time I bought a really cheap PSU.

Currently I'm using a 7-year-old Corsair 650 (H series, I think) that for most of its like was on 24/7. My second PSU is an ancient Antec unit that's at least 10 years old or more.

Coincidentally, my 10+ yr PSUs going into backup roles are a Corsair HX520 and Antec Trio 550W (I've a third also that's a Corsair VX450).

Last time I purchased a cheap power supply was one included in a case that really fit what I wanted to build. In the short time after it was on while i was shopping for a upgrade PSU, it died and took a mobo with it. Last time I built anything with a cheap PSU - that was almost 10 years ago as well...
