<< Most americans only know about what they are told by their tv. Of those that watch tv, 25% get their news from MTV news. The other 75% get it from the evening news which focuses on US news primarily. >>

you are forgetting fox news

Some probably but there are some people in every country who dont know anything about the world.

I think the only way to get some sortof a mesurment on this are headlines in local newspapers, most people get their information about the world through them and if they do not reflect the world the people wont know what is going on in the world.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

NonTechGuy, I thought you had a legitimate question but seeing your other posts it's obvious you have some sort of bone to pick with Americans. So, in response to that I'll happily respond in the good old American adage: STFU.

I can't believe we're really dignifying this guy with responses; it's been made clear through his posts that he slings the word "majority" around without any respect for what its use entails. it's also clear that he's latched onto stereotypes that are catchy to him for some reason, and therefore wants to live his life thru algorithm based upon them. don't bother trying to refute his stance, because he's done "A LOT" of research on "ALOT" of American, and so he knows exactly the way the "Majority"/"Most" of us are.

I don't mind the question itself one bit; the theme (if you've not noticed its popularity, then you DO need to pay attention to the rest of the world a bit more) is a valid one. however this is not the open-minded, or even educated approach/audience that it deserves. I can argue this topic both ways productively, but I'll not do so here with someone who won't be willing/able to understand the arguments being made.

<< i don't consider Canada or Mexico part of America because the United States of this America you speak of exclude themselves from the rest of America (they are considered different nations with very different policies and laws etc). North America is just a royal name with no meaning to it.

btw, why do Americans think they are the best country in the world? it is natural to be loyal to your nation (pretty damn rare in Canada though) but if you look at numbers you see education levels in the US are lower than that of Canada and most of Europe and most of Asia countries. the crime rate in the US (per capita) is higher in that US than Canada, Europe and Asia. the medical system is more screwed up in the US than Canada, Europe and many parts of Asia in that it costs an arm and a leg if something goes wrong, if the disease doesn't kill you, you aren't left with enough money to live. prices for drugs are BRUTAL in the US which is why seniors take huge bus trips to Canada to buy a half year's worth of perscription drugs (we're making a killing in profits on that one, thanks). the US is MOST LIKELY country to be attack by any sort of terrorist activity or war started in the world. Americans are hated in many places throughout the world because of imperialism (Britain too actually).
>>

Judging comments, I think you are pretty ignorant to what goes on in the US.

We live in the most sucessful country in the world. The majority of distasteful comments made twards the US are from jealous individuals, who have not had the opportunity to to enjoy such prosperity.

well the US is so backwards that they are the one country doing everything different and the populous thinks the rest of the world is insane because of it.

only the US tries to control the government of other countries on NUMEROUS ocassions such as putting Augusto Pinochet in power as well as Quadafi and Husan as well as the taliban then years later after hatred against the US arises for what they have done they ask "why do they hate us? we are the good guys!"

the US is always running a ton of projects in south america where US crop dusters are poisoning crops they don't even own then wonder why hatred boils up against the US.

being led to think that the US has a right to control the rest of the world like most Americans do is either from arrogance or brainwashing

To be fair, the things you list here are things done by the US GOVERNMENT, not things that the "average" American had anything to do with.

It's fine to b!tch about the government. I do that all the time. But don't equate government with "all people."

maybe that is why Canada was ranked best country to live in about 5 consecutive times and the US has yet to win once.

your comment of saying US is most successful country in the world is just frightening, if you look at how much the US owes in terms of debt compared to Canada and the yearly budget turnout of the country you can actually see that US owes MORE than Canada does and the past 5 years Canada has come up with a BETTER yearly budget than the US has, the US is actually LOSING MONEY and going farther into debt but Canada is coming OUT of debt.
strange how you can relate going into debt with success.

alot of people in the USA have no desire to explore the world. Their is soo much going on with our borders that you probably couldn't experience it all in a life time. Heck, I know one elderly lady that has never left the five buros of NYC and she must be atleast 65 or 70 years old!
However there are also Americans that want to explore the world as well. Its mixed bag.. just like any other country. You can't generalize Americans.

Well, that point might have some merit. I don't know. I know that a lot of people I know are very Ameri-centric (is that a word?), so they have no problem with anything the US government does. But I also know that the majority of my more intelligent friends who are very good critical thinkers -DO- have a problem with much of what the government does.

To me, it seems to be a question of whether an individual is capable of thinking critically. A lot of people just take what they're told, assume it's the truth, and assume it's the best that can be done. But then others are smarter than that.

I'm just wondering this, why do most Americans have no idea what goes on outside their country?
It's like the average American thinks the world ends at the border to Canada, Mexico, Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean.

any thoughts of reasons causes etc?

what is this?a flamebait? i think its because too many foriengers get their impression of america from watching leno's interviews with the town idiots. i forget the name of those segments.

actually Canadians are not trying to be Americans. we are both British colonies with people of the same origins, it is just natural that we are very similar including that our climates are similar for the lower half of Canada and upper half of the US.
all i am trying to be is NON french canadian...

Do you have any links to these statistics you keep quoting. You need to back up your claims. I don't think you can - and I think you are pulling the majoity of your information out of your a$$.

Canada has about the same population as the state of California, which is one-25th its size.

there was a funny one of those last night, he was interviewing people in Vegas and one guy said "Jay, i came here and i lost $35000 i don't like this place anymore"

it's funny when they find those screwed up articles in newspapers and stuff. one of them from a few nights ago went like this - there was an add in classifieds that said "76 Camaro blue, stolen, if seen call this number" then 2 lines down it says "76 blue Camaro for sale"

<< The majority of Americans believe they should just control the world through military force which always leads to US medling in other country's business such as military operation in other countries for seemingly no reason at all. >>

This is such a dumb ass statement. You have no idea how many Americans are against so much of the stuff our government gets involved with. As for calling it "medling", that's not right either. Do you know how much money the US dumps into failing countrys? Do you know how many governments and economies the US has helped save from total collapse? I personally think a lot of the money and effort was wasted, but that's my opinion. And what does the US get in return from all these failing governments and economies? Usually jack sh!t. That's right, we pour billions of dollars into these backwards ass economies to try to help and don't get butt kiss in return. What has Canada done for other governments/economies in comparison with the US? Didley that's what. So until your govt. starts putting out some serious effort, cash (play money) and man hours in aid, I don't think you should be flappin' your gums.

Strange how you relate debt of the government to a Country's success.

U.S.

GDP - real growth rate: 5% (2000 est.)
GDP - per capita: purchasing power parity - $36,200 (2000 est.)

Canaduh

that is the most arrogant argument you can make. haven't you learned ANYTHING from the AMD/Intel CPU war to know price has nothing to do with performance? if US doesn't get some form of sane government to start paying off that huge debt of like a few trillion dollars from that whole cold war thing yer gonna be totaly screwed.
