Thx for the reply for the other questions. Still have few more concerning the motherboard if you don't mind (finally build the machine last night). Do I install the via 4 in 1 or no and if I do, do I install everything on the 4 in 1's. Also, would this be the correct order for the setup?

1. Install Windows xp
2. Install 4 in 1
3. Install SP1
4. Install Direct x 8.1
5. Update Video Driver
6. Update Sound Driver
7. Update USB 2.0 driver
8. Update windows
9. Install other software

Another question deals with the power button. Right now, if I shut down on windows, once the shut down screen comes (safe to turn computer off). I have to hold in the power button for about 5 seconds for the computer to shut down, is there a reason for that, or did I connect things wrong in the power led, hdd led, and so forth, thx again.

I'm not Insane3d, but I've installed and re-installed Windows a lot of times and this is what I recommend.

Install WinXP
Install WinXP SP1
Install Via 4in1
Install any driver Updates from (Windows Update)
Install your video card driver (you can actually do this one at any step).
Install other software.

There is no need to install Directx or usb2.0 because those all come with winxp and winxp sp1.

Last time I installed XP+SP1 I thought it wouldn't be necessary to install the USB2 drivers, but I had to do it to see my USB2 ports working.

Do you have the same motherboard?

Brandon, see if USB2 works before installing any drivers.

I didn't see it was about the 8k5a2, but my board has the same 8235 southbridge which supports USB2, so...

Thx for the reply guys, will go and try this out after work today. I do have xp installed at the moment and it works pretty well, but I am paranoid about things like this, so I will go and do it again in that order (I did install a lot of junk in the process, like hdtach, sysoftsandra, etc).

There is no need to install Directx or usb2.0 because those all come with winxp and winxp sp1.

While there is no need to install DX since it is included with XP, SP1 or no, SP1 does not include the USB 2.0 drivers for the 8235 Southbridge. It will recognize them as USB ports, but not USB 2.0. You need to install the USB 2.0 XP drives off the CD that comes with the board. For some reason, MS told board manufacturers that they couldn't make the Win 2K/XP USB 2.0 drivers for download for some licensing reason.

The 8235 South Bridge was not in use before XP SP1 was final, so it's highly unlikely specific USB 2.0 enabled drivers for the 8235 are included. When I installed XP SP1 on my setups, it picked up the USB ports, but just used a generic Via USB 1.1 driver.

BTW, you guys do know how to make a integrated Windows XP SP1 install CD don?t you? This is much easier than installing XP and then SP1....it installs SP1 right off the bat. LMK if you guys need instructions...

Here's the link:

I did not say Windows XP SP1 did not come with USB 2.0. Windows XP SP1 supports the USB 2.0 standard, and devices using it, but it does not come with specific drivers for the USB 2.0 ports controlled by the 8235 Southbridge...

Oh I see...my bad. So the USB 2.0 drivers on the Epox cd are the ones you recommend or are there newer ones?

Did anyone try to make the Cd and failed, I followed the directions and the cd worked, but it didn't include the SP1 updates. I did go through the notes and I think I messed up at the following place

Enter the Volume Label as WXPVOL_EN

Enter the System Identifier as WXPVOL_EN

Enter the Volume Set as WXPVOL_EN

Enter the Publisher as MICROSOFT_CORPORATION

Enter the Data Preparer as MICROSOFT_CORPORATION

Enter the Application as WXPVOL_EN

* For English Windows XP Professional OEM substitute WXPVOL_EN with WXPOEM_EN
* For English Windows XP Home OEM substitute WXPVOL_EN with WXHOEM_EN

* For English Windows XP Professional Retail/NFR(Not For Resale) substitute WXPVOL_EN with WXPFPP_EN
Windows XP Professional Full Packaged Product English Version

* For English Windows XP Home Upgrade substitute WXPVOL_EN with WXHCCP_EN

* For Italian Windows XP Professional OEM substitute WXPVOL_EN with WXPOEM_IT
* For Italian Windows XP Home OEM substitute WXPVOL_EN with WXHOEM_IT

I have Windows XP Pro upgrade, and I didn't substitute it into wxpvol_en, hopefully that will do the job when I try it again tonight. Just curious if anyone else have any other suggestions if that's not the case, thx for all the help again.
