I was installing a new hard drive and left it on the top of the computer while working inside of it. It fell off and broke.

I was under my desk working on my computer and my house was all hot and stuff and then I passed gas. Awful awful to have the hottest air around your face in the worst smell in the world in a small area!

Nothing too bad yet. Typed
rm * .c
(note the space between the * and the .) under unix once. Lost the whole kit and kaboodle.

Learned that the 'f' in fdisk can stand for something other than "format." And my dad came home early that day.

I knocked the PCI T1 card (from lanmedia - you should check them out. Linux support. Mmmmmmm.) out of the router heading to the internet while it was turned on. Not only did it fry the T1 card's CSU/DSU, it also fried the smartjack at our end and the smartjack about a mile down the loop. ISDN for a week sucked.

he worst thing I've done would be not realise what the red switch on the power supply does. (input voltage selector) So while trying to find out why oh why this motherboard would work with my new processor, I thought maybe this has something to do with flick the switch *kaboom* Nowthe motherboard doesn't work at all.

Put in an internal CDR power plug the wrong way, while the computer was already on (too lazy to shutdown). Yes, I know the plug is shaped to only go one way but trust me, it'll go on enough to make electrical contact. Fortunately MB was spared, but CDR turned dead.

got pissed off that my computer locked up on me, WHAM in the side...(Not knowing it was near the edge...) the eternal sense of my CPU hitting the hard WOODEN Floor. Only 3-4 feet but enough to crack the case and knock the HD loose.. $200 bucks to replace case and HD

EDIT- It was a Plastic Cover on the front for the CD, CD-RW, and Floppy...never knew a replacement for that would cost $50 bucks!!!!!!!!

In college, there was this guy who always came into the computer lab and ate Motza bread crackers right on top of the keyboard. Every time I saw him, I wanted to go over to him and slap him on the head and explain what happens when you get crumbs in a keyboard. The anger kept building and building till the present day.

I suppose there's no moral to this story as yet...

Hot swap a processor? Damn...that could get a bit painful...

The worst thing I ever did was actually while I was learning. A friend of mine was giving me the tour (this is where the RAM goes, this is an ISA slot, this is IDE, etc...) while he was building his new system.

Well, long story short, part of the room had carpet. After walking to fetch a tool for him, I returned and tried to show how well I had been listening, I pointed and said "that's the BIOS, chip, right?" fzzzap! You could see the spark jump to it.

Oops. Luckily it wasn't completely screwed.

LOL - this really brings back a lot of early day memories..

firstly, i blew my 40mb hdd on my 286 by accidentally missing the screw driver and hit the hdd components. while the system was on.. wtf was i think i dont know.

then my 486 sx25, jabbed a printer parallel port into the pc while it was on.. zap, dead 400mb imb hdd..

my cyrix pr200, was opening to check system temperature.. and i forgot i had the flu then.. sneezed and a huge chuck of flem flew onto the lithium battery, short it along with the system bios..

k6 233, playing a game and all of a sudden bam, house power box blew cos my sis screwed up the air cond.. and being a cheapo i didnt include a power switch.. ack.. my 2.1 gb hdd dead. (as you can see, i have a bad hdd record.. hehe)
then a few months later, i decided it was smart to get it running at 290mhz... obviously i forgot how hot these babies actually ran even at 233.. it burnt out after a minute, and stupidly i took it off to check touching it with my fingers..

celeron 366@550 died after over a year of service, so i got a 566 replacement.. along with golden orb.. when installing the fan, i pushed too hard cos it didnt fit, forgot to take out the pad underneath orb first.. ack.. one cracked cpu.. SOB!!

then my last huge stupidity was my Abit Kt7, decide to run it at 133mhz, bam.. northbridge burnt out before it managed to finish system checks.. out with it included my vid card, sound card, and power box..

now im broke. running on crappy components.. but things are looking bright, gonna get the Radeon DDR soon.. and ive got copper sinks + 3 fans readying to go. i hope it wont die..

I turned off power to the main NFS file server at a company i used to work for. I was trying to change the tapes in its built in drives for the nightly backup and couldnt get the door open. I spotted a key which i thought may unlock it, but it turned off the power instead.

Lets see

  1. 1) Formatted wrong HDD
    2) Blew up PSU by changing voltage selector to 115 instead of 230
    3) Dropped a brand new CPU (Duron) at the shop (on to a concrete floor) in front of the shop owners. Bent about 80% of the pins. Got home, bent them back....w00t works.
    4) Reversed the AT power connectors on an AT mobo

Not too bad compared to some other people I know
