Question with Cisco switch and ASUS Router

In the process of learning Cisco CCNA/CCENT. I got one 2950 cisco switch hooked up via console/serial to my desktop PC.

I just configured and setup a VLAN Ip Address. What would be the best method to connect to my switch remotely? Would I connect my 1721 router that I have to it, then connect my 1721 to my Asus AC87U Wifi router I use at home? This CBTNugget has an example where the person has two network ports on his home pc, which I do not. So I would have to run it to my router.

Or would I skip the cisco router, and just plug into my AC87R, and find somewhere on the router to setup an static ip that I have assigned to my switch?


Also, if I turn the switch off, do I lose all config on the switch? Thanks

If by remote you mean from the actual LAN then Telnet is your friend.

You can segment the switch by putting the router in.

Without the router will be easier toy with and setup. Use the range your' AC87R has, for example 192.168.2.x and SNM of 255.255.255.0 if your router has that. This for IP of switch.

If you save the cfg to start up then it will load from a reset or power cycle.

Brush up on that CCNA.

SSH. Don't use telnet. Even for training. Build good habits early.

Yeah, just a management VLAN or simple IP address on the same VLAN segment the device is on. Activate HTTPS/SSH depending on what you need. Done.
