Questions about Dell 2005fpw

I just got a Dell 2005fpw, and I notice when I move my mouse in the desktop, the cursor gets blurry. Is this what they mean by "ghosting"? I notice it in games too, especially CSS (altough running CSS at 1680x1050 seems to help). I also noticed that games seem to look like they run smoother on my old 19" Mistubishi DiamondPro than they do on this LCD montor, mainly the mouse movements. The mouse movements in general on my old CRT just look smoother and more fluid, where as on my LCD movenemts seem not-so-smooth, almost jerky. Anyone else with experience this problem with their monitor? I wouldn't mind the slight ghosting if my mouse were as responsive as it seemed on my CRT.

Also, is there a way to change the refresh rate to something above 60hz? Would setting it above 60hz even bring any sort of benefit?

Welcome to the world of gaming on LCD monitors..

For fast paced FPS like CSS and UT2004..... CRT is better.. You will definately get a better kill ratio on one.... 16 ms 12 ms, 8ms, its almost all the same. Its a limitation of the technology.

Refresh rate has very little affect on it.

So, pretty much everyone experiences this limitation? Even when the colors of the cursor drag behind while moving the mouse?

As the brand new owner of an 8ms panel (hyundai L90D+) I can say that 8ms panels all but eliminate the ghosting effect on LCDs. On my other 25ms panel, I couldn't stand gaming, but this new LCD looks great in HL2, a game making heavy use of light an dark effects, so I imagine it'll look great in HL2 as well. As for the Dell monitor, I've heard dell's 16ms models have pretty good gaming performance, but I'm sure there is some ghosting still. If it's a problem, I recommend hooking up your old CRT as a backup display, and just using it for games. That's the setup I had until today.

Well, its good enough for Half Life 2. My main problem is with CSS, and the cursor blurring when I move my mouse.

I would disagree with the kill ratio statement. If you ratio is actually effected by the minor ghosting then you need to

a) get a life because you game so much that minor ghosting effects you!
b) get a life because you suck so bad at gaming and blame it on minor ghosting!
c) um... nothing clever for this one...

Seriously though, my scores have gone up in UT 2004 and CS: S

As for 8ms, I have not seen one yet that is 8ms AND an 8 bit panel. I will take some ghosting (that I actually don't notice) over less ghosting and crappier colors.

That's why you need a dual setup. 1 kickass LCD for normal use and a CRT for mission critical gaming.
I've never had to resort to the CRT yet, but just in case.

Do all 2005fpw's have crappy viewing angles when watching dvd's? IF i look at a (especially darkly lit) dvd's from the sides i see a horrible purple tint. I"ve had this problem with all 3 2005's i've gotten. is this the infamous light bleeding problem?

The 2005fpw is made from an S-IPS panel. With all S-IPS panels, if you view from the side you will see the blacks turn purple, more so as your angle gets further from 90 degrees. This is not the same as backlight bleeding, although if you read threads here and elsewhere and look at pictures people have taken of their monitors, it's pretty clear that people have confused the two. By the way, DVDs look great on my 2005fpw, but I don't view them from the side.
