So what are the differences besides:

1) gas prices are way above $2/gal.
2) there's no such thing as a car inspection in CA
3) beware of the "big one"

Can you guys name any others ?

Also, if anyone can tell me [anything at all] about the Bankers Hill area just north of downtown, that'd be great. Rent seems pretty cheap there.

THanks in advance.

there is no car safety inspection but you have to pass smog every two years, costs like $50.

you'll be spoiled by the weather and the people...oh and you'll get a lot more apartment for the money. the downtown area is very...subdued but still quite nice

<- from san diego, moving to ny in a few months, still bitter

downtown subdued ? Meaning it's quiet except during business hours ? Dead at night ?

wouldnt go that far. i had a friend who had a nice studio living downtown, and every, oh say, 15-20 minutes a plane would descend right above his place rattling his windows. but downtown is pretty big, and there are some spots where that wont occur. in fact, you'd probably be in pretty good shape at banker's hill.

in san diego, im not sure about dsl services, but i know there are 3 cable companies that all offer internet service also, depending on area. they are: cox communications, time warner/road runner, aldelphia. i currently use cox communications, and i pay $30/month for cable internet service, i own my own cable modem, and i get a discount for being a member of the credit union. i couldnt tell ya the other rates for the other companies, but im assuming it would be in the same vein in which im paying now.

as far as cable goes, i have digital cable, and i believe my bill is a shade under $40/month not including the premiums ($7.95/month for hbo). used to have standard which was $32/month, and of course this is through cox. id have to pull out my papers to see if those numbers are exactly correct, but if they are not, they are at least in that vincinity and i may be a dollar or two off.

I'm not real familiar with that area. I'm in North County San Diego and only go near downtown when I have to pick someone up from the airport. Gas Lamp is a fun area though.

I have Cox for my high speed internet access. Buy the cable modem, it's worth it in the long run, but you might want to rent it for a month to see if the service is decent where you are. I've had my service with them for about 5 years now and I'm very happy with it.

If you are in the market for a home, let me know. My wife is a Realtor for Coldwell Banker and she can hook you up!

The Claremont area was pretty nice and is really centrally located. Easy to get to the beach, downtown, wherever you want to go.
That was ten years ago though, so I don't know how much has changed.

i live in north county right now... my work is in san diego...if i had to move tomorrow, clairemont would be the place i would go to. of course, if i was rich, it'd be: encinitas, leucadia, del mar, or poinsettia (right near the coast )

tijuana. mexico.

my bf says "don't live south of the 8 unless its chula vista, it's ghetto. hillcrest is ghetto, which sounds like where banker's hill is. live in chula vista, since the commute isn't that bad."

"to the north, live in mission beach but housing is more expensive but not ghetto."

try to avoid where san diego state students live also which is also mostly south of the 8.

its the best move you'll ever make,

the people are nice, the women are hot, the weather is better, housing is cheaper, the women are hotter, you're close to everything, sking, beach, hiking, everything.

You never will unless you've been there and know what we're talking about.
My brother is the one who's moving so I'm just doing some legwork (I wish I could up and leave like him)... he did say Tijuana was shady... they went over the border for 10 minutes and came back on his last trip there. He claims the Banker's Hill area where his complex is - is nice... like gated community-quality without the gates... and they have their own parking garage and everything. I read a write-up on the area and it sounded good too. Just can't figure out the reason for the cheap rent. BTW, thx for the tips Freesia... downtown SD is all below the 8, isn't it ? He's already put down a deposit... I just wanted to make sure it's not one of the worst areas possible...

My mom used to work on Banker's Hill. It is a nice area, right near Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo. The differences between San Diego and NYC are huge. NYC is very congested, and San Diego is also but not nearly as much as NYC, San Diego County is partly a redneck town. If you go out to East County it is pretty much redneck city, and they all take the 8 west in the morning to go to their crappy construction jobs in the city.
