Questions about Shuttle XPCs

I am looking at getting one of the Shuttle XPCs to use as a media center PC and I have a couple questions about it. First, how loud are they and related to that is how hot do they get? I was looking at getting a SK41G (AMD based) and I am concerned about the noise the fan makes when the CPU is under load. I originally wanted to get a P3 based Shuttle and use a .13u Celeron in it but they are almost as expensive as the faster AMD versions. For the CPU, I was probably going to get a 1700XP and if needed I can run it at 200FSB insted of 266 to keep it cool and quiet.

I have a SS51G2 with the HEATpipe ICE technology. It is virtually silent. The fan rarely runs at all. But mine is a P4 system. I hear that the AMD versions are noisier since the processors run hotter tnah P4. By the way, mine is for sale if you are intersted. Just PM me for details.

I have the SK41G with a 2100+ and Radeon 9700 pro. Under load the fan is audible but nothing I would call intrusive. As for heat, mine rarely gets hot. However, I would recommend that you keep it relatively free from obstruction as to allow for maximum heat dissipation. I had in on a shelf in my desk where it was surrounded by wood and that made it get warm to the touch on all sides. I moved it to the top of my desk and now it stays nice and cool. I think most of the noise generated on mine is from my 8500DV.

Thanks guys. Like I said, it is going to be used primarly as a Divx and MP3 player. So, there will not be too much strain on it. That paired with a T-bred 1700 it should run fairly cool.

get the 0.13 tbred b 1700xp - they run at 30watts/1.5v or alternatively have a look for a mobile xp chip I had a 1600xp chip which runs at 1.4v in my sn41g2. Also consider running a 2500xp barton at slower speeds they are quite cool running with good performance. The FSB you should keep as high as possible and just change the bridges to get the desired multiplier.

That is true, I forgot about unlocking the AMD processors. I am used to Intel's processors not being able to change the multipliers.

I have a SK41G with 1700 XP+ and it runs very cool. The I.C.E. system is excellent, however the stock fans for the system are not the best. Many people mod their case and PSU to increase air flow (by removing the rear fan grill) and reduce noise (by switching the 80mm and/or 40mm fans out). My case is pretty quiet, but not silent. It is much quieter than my full tower ATX computer with a 5k rpm delta in it though, so its good enough for me.
