Questions about speeding tickets

So, after half a year of trying to shorten my commute by going ~85 in a 65, I finally got pulled over (first time ever) yesterday. It was incredibly painless - officer took my license and registration, said he got me going 85, went back to his car, came back 3 min. later and said he's letting me off this time.

This got me thinking...

1. Do cops keep a record of this stuff even if you don't get a ticket? In other words, do you get "one freebie" (assuming you aren't doing something totally ridiculous) and after that it's a ticket?

2. Does this record (esp. if you do get a ticket) have any effect on your car insurance rates?

They keep records of tickets and written warnings but not verbal warnings.

No, to my knowledge they don't keep it. I had a very similar thing happen to me (except 82 instead of 85 ). I'm too much of a cheapskate to want to pay a ticket, so I just drive a bit slower... usually 71-73, which is still a little faster than most traffic goes and since this is only 11 miles out of my commute, it's really only 8 minutes and 15 seconds vs about 9 minutes and 10 seconds. Save a minute or save $60? (More if you include the gas you'll consume).

No, they don't. However, if the same cop pulls you over again you can bet he'll remember you.

He probably got something much more important thing to do (could be an accident, traffic incident, anything that the dispatcher wants to check out) thats why he let you go this time.
Before he took your DL he already knows the history of your car. They usually run a check on the license plate before approaching the driver.
