So I've been craving a space sim as of late and I decided to give the 14 day trial of Eve online a try. Then I read that this game is actually from 2003. and that there is a newer version entitled Eve Trinity.
Is the classic version going to have very dated graphics? If so is there any way to test out the trinity version?

Even with the 14-day trial, you're still using the same client as all other users. You can have the "classic" client download the new Trinity graphics changes. It's under the graphics settings tab of the escape menu, on the right side of the panel. It looks purdy.

Awesome thanks. I haven't played a space game for a decade. Can't wait to try this out.

It's a solid game but very slow moving. It takes for ever in real time to get what you want in the exact configuration that you want because of the skills. All empire PvE stuff gets old really fast though. I'm putting my character on a long skill and taking a break for a while.

I actually like the idea of mining, gathering and exploring. if it's slow and I get to meet new people/races whatever I think I'll enjoy it. Like I said I haven't played a space sim in a decade. I'm going to pretend this is the real thing and see how it goes. I'm spoiled by shooters, rts, racing and rpgs. This should be something fresh & NEW.

its not a space sim, at least not in the classic sense, like Wing Commander. In EVE, you control your ship by mouse clicks.

Also, just so you're prepared, you don't advance by killing things or mining or building things... the only way to improve your character is to... log out and wait to level up. It's all time-based (real life time) and many skills will take 10 days+ to level up. You've been warned.

Hey I like everything I've heard sofar. I am looking for something very different and that serves as a fun, time consuming escape. Anyone know what 24bit +8bit alpha is? I'm assuming that's 32 bit and better than 24bit?
Starting the content download now. I think I'll wait to play until I have all the content and can turn all the eyecandy up all the way.

Alright I have another question. I've been doing battle with these two pirate ships for like a half hour and they just won't die. The tutorial keeps saying "the targets must be eliminated before continuing".
Is this to be expected or am I doing something wrong here?

Your starting weapon probably has a short range of about 2500m or so. Approach the target, orbit them at 2000m or so, and click your starter gun. They should be wasted in no time.

24bit+8bit alpha is what we normaly call 32bit color range

then we have 8 bits for red, 8 bits for green and 8 bits for blue, then there is the extra 8 bits for alpha transparancy channels, and yes its what you want

Ok I have the gun issue figured out. Am I to understand that I can actually put a bounty on another persons head? Say one of my friends or are bounties limited to the game itself using them when someone breaks the law? How do these bounties work?

Also is there any way at all to make the fonts larger? I have the font set to the maximum size of 12 and in 1920x1200 or even 1680x1050 they are so darn small it gives me a headache trying to read them. My desk isn't set up to have my face up against the monitor.

You can place a bounty on someone if they have negative security status.

did they recently reset the EVE world? I think I heard something about that here on this forum but couldnt get verification. I think the only way I'd get back into EVE was if the servers were reset.

No they did not reset it, and most definitely never will. That would piss off absolutely everyone that plays the game since you train skills on a real-time system.

The best thing you can do is join a player corp. Corps play together and help each other.

If you're interested in the industrial side (mining, mfg, R&D, trade, PvE) aka "carebearing" then contact me in game (Stefx)

it's sort of a Catch 22. Its because of that skill system I don't want to start playing and be perma-gimp with no hope of ever being equal skill to the people that have merely had an active account for a longer time.

Alright another question. I need money. I want to mine but I still have very little money(maybe 1,000,000) and the default ship. What's the best way to start off making some cash? If I understand correctly you can buy a drone and it will do the mining for you and return the materials automatically and then go back and mine more? It would be nice to just leave the game running for awhile and come back to find a pile of cash but somehow this sounds too simple to be correct.
Any other ways for a neophyte to make some quick cash? Mining with this current ship and its tiny hold is painstaking and tedious.

Mine/ Missions.

The Beginning is the hardest part of the game and weeds out the weak.

Anyway, with 1 Mil, you should be able to buy a Frigate with fittings and start doing missions.

Pick one ship and learn to fly it well. If you go all out and start training multiply ship types without the proper skills you are going screw yourself over. The more advance a ship you decided to train for the more advance skills you need to field it properly. So the best thing to do is to select a ship that fits your current skills and time frame. As you max out your skills for that ship then train the next level of support skills for the next class of ship you want to fly, etc. Hence this is why you don't go nuts with training all sorts of ships. Your support skills are more essential and allow you to do more with one class of ship then training a whole bunch of ships and having crappy skills for them.

The great thing about EVE is that it rewards those who plan ahead. You don't need a capital ship or battleship to do well in pvp. Anyone that tells you this is full of crap IMHO. As for vets the only real advantage they have is that they can fly more types of ships properly fitted for more roles then your average player and they can generate ISK using more then one method. Of course just because they can fly a frigate, cruiser, battle cruiser, battleship, etc...fully loaded out for whatever role they like to fulfill out does not mean they'll do so or that they are invincible. For every ship load out there is a counter in game and you can only do so much with your limited module fittings on a ship.

Also having the means to generate ISK is a must. Whether you mine, rat, do exploration complexes, salvage wrecks, trade/haul, refine, gank/ransom people, etc...it doesn't matter what you do as long as you have a means to keep the ISK rolling in if you need to. Build a nice support system for yourself to compensate for those rainy days and you can engage in pvp with no problem. IMHO some ISK generating ventures are more inline with PvP then others. If your main goal is ship to ship PvP in the game then ratting, mission running, ransoming, etc... are better tailored toward this aspect of the game. Mining, trading, refining, production, etc... require more effort to train in skills that are not PvP related and they are not necessarily better when in comes to generating money fast for a new player.

To sum it up.....

* Specialize with one ship type and max out your support skills for that ship and the role you are going to play in a gang/fleet.

* Specialize with one ISK generating method that is inline with your current goals. Once you've maxed out in your areas of specialization then move on to another area you are interested in and do the same.

You don't need ub3r huge ships to contribute in PvP fights. Besides very rarely will you ever face a 1 on 1 scenarios in EVE. Most fights are usually lopsided ganks or fleet ops.

There is a max training level you can get to (5). For smaller ships and weapon systems, it doesn't really take that long to reach that level and you'll be just as good at it as someone playing the game since it started.

Older characters with more skill points tend to be good at many things, but you're only doing one thing at a time. So being great at flying a force recon ship doesn't help you when you're in your carrier. Plus, a group of much less experienced characters can take down an experienced character with the right amount of team work.

D*MN*T! This game is pissing me off. I have wasted 12 hours trying to learn the simplest little things. I can't even figure out how to upgrade a simple cargo bay expansion and no one in the neophyte channel seems to be able to help me. This game SERIOUSLY needs audio communication. A knowledgeable person probably could have talked me through the last wasted three hours in five minutes. Who has this much freaking time on their hands!!?:|

I am only frustrated because I want to play the game and the learning curve is (&^$*^%&*(*&^ KILLING ME!! Not to mention the little fonts give me a damned headache.

I have the font size turned all the way up. At 1920x1200 I have to just about have my face planted against the monitor to read them. I have a 24" monitor and almost 20/20 vision. I'm sorry a size 12 font just does not cut it.
