Hey Guys,

I’ve recently read about the benefits of Bias Lighting and how it can help in reducing eye strains. I am really intrigued by this and wish to set it up for my 24 inch PC monitor and 2 60 inch TV we have at home. Although LED light strips are very new to me so I just have some questions regarding this, sincerely appreciate your help with this!

1. Since I’m buying it for 3 different components, will I be fine with just buying a super long LED strip and cutting it into 3 pieces? Or do I have to buy 3 separately?

2. Because the voltages here in Australia is different than what’s in the US, will I have any issue buying these ones from Amazon and plug it into Australian TV/monitor/USB/power sockets?

3. The two popular ones I found both mention they are very safe being 5V, is 5V generally better than the 12V ones which are more common? (I.E. less chance of breaking, setting on fire etc.)

4. Since I have multiple devices that need the LED light strips, is it better to buy ones that’s Bluetooth connected or remote controlled?

5. Are there any specific Bias Lighting modules you would recommend for long sessions in front of the computer, and also for watching TVs? Or are the ones I linked decent enough for the job?

Sorry if my questions sound silly haha, bias lighting generally sounds awesome and I’m really eager to learn more about this. Thanks for all your help with this!

Best Regards,
Johnson

  1. Common LED strips can be cut about every 10cm or so. You'll have to handle connecting power to the cut strips though, which will often involve soldering new connectors on. If you don't want to do that, then buy 3 strips.
  2. If they're powered from USB then it doesn't matter. If you get one that comes with a mains power adapter then you'll have to check that it can handle the Australian mains voltage - most of them can handle 100-240V, and so will work anywhere in the world.
  3. Personally I prefer 12V ones because they are more efficient, but 5V ones are convenient for powering from USB. One would hope that they won't break or catch fire regardless of voltage, but you never can be sure with random Chinese electronics.

I recently remodeled a room in our house as a game room. We installed 2 40" TVs with PS4s and also added a computer setup. I bought these LED kits: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B074KFP426/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and then bought these connectors so that I could cut the strips down to the correct size to fit around the TV/monitor: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B011BD2B5Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I used the USB ports on the TVs and computer monitor to power the LED lights. So far I have been happy with them with a few caveats.

1. The TVs randomly power up the USB port so the lights just come on. This could be solved by manually turning off the lights with the remote before turning the TV off.

2. The kit on the computer monitor started having issues where certain lights weren't working. I found that some of the right angle connectors weren't making a good connection and had to change them out.

This is dependent on the TV brand AND model. On my one Samsung and on my Vizio, the USB ports are always on. On my older Panasonic, the USB port is only on when the TV is on.
None have the USB ports operate "randomly".

These are Insignia TVs for what it's worth. My guess is that it has something to do with being a smart TV and "waking" up for some reason. It's in our bonus room upstairs so we don't see it that much, it's just really weird to go up there at times and the lights are on by themselves.
