Hi, just wondering if someone can answer the following riddle for me. Here is a pop-quiz question:

I am planning a setup as follows:

Comp A (onboard gigabit) --> Cat 5e --> D-Link Wireless Gigabit Router
Comp B (onboard gigabit) --> Cat 5e --> D-Link Wireless Gigabit Router
Comp C (onboard gigabit) --> Cat 5e --> D-Link Wireless Gigabit Router

Then the following:
Comp D (onboard 100TX) --> Cat 5 (non-e) --> 10 mbs hub (yes, 10)
X-Box (onboard 100TX) --> Cat 5e --> 10 mbs hub (again yes, 10)

Then the hub goes to the gateway as follows:
10 mbs hub --> Cat 5e --> D-Link Wireless Gigabit Router

OK...so here's the multiple choice riddle for you:

Q: Are...

a) computers A, B & C all able to 'talk' to each other at gigabit speed, but any of them can only 'talk' to computer D at 10 mbs and vice versa. Plus X-box will download at 10 mbs speed.

b) all computers downgraded in ability to 'talk' to any one of each other only at 10 mbs, regardless of the capabilities of each system/console.

Thanks!

Typically A) today. Be wary of switch buffer overload issues going from 1 gig > 10/Half
Why not spend the $20 and replace the hub?

Cause I'm cheap, lol!

Kidding. Well sorta...really, it's because buying the router for this setup (which is the only thing I am missing) does take up all I'm willing to spend on networking stuff right now. Ideally I would like to find a brand name gigabit wireless router that has 5 ports for about $40 or less, but not much luck there. Comps A, B, and C are the only ones I use regularly (primary gaming/work rig + secondary work rig + Fedora rig for Apache and as a Samba to centralize files between all three). Comp D is actually just a very old P4 that I want put to use as a 'house guest' rig they can surf with, so I figured I'd connect it using an old hub I have laying here. I just didn't want that hub slowing communications between my regular rigs. For an extra $20, I would probably just buy a wireless adapter for the guest computer, and that way I can move it around wherever they need. :thumbsup:

Hmm...update: actually I forgot my ISP offers to 2 IPs to their customers. So I guess I will do this:

Comp A, B, C, & D --> Cat 5e (all except D) --> Wireless gigabit router

Wireless gigabit router --> Cat 5e --> 10 mbs hub
Xbox --> Cat 5e --> 10 mbs hub

Hub --> ISP modem.

That should give a little more throughput to comp D (at least it goes 100TX instead of 10/half) and put the Xbox outside the network, since it doesn't really need to be on the network or behind a firewall. Or maybe I can just put the guest computer outside the network and leave it exposed, and put the Xbox inside the network.

Put everything behind the router, cancel the second static IP -> replace the hub -> Profit?

No profit. The package I have with my ISP includes 2 dynamic IPs regardless, so I can ask them to disable the second one, but it won't reduce my monthly bill any.

However, now when you mentioned replacing the hub the second time, I totally forgot. When I buy my gigabit wireless router, I can just use the router I am currently using instead of the hub (can't believe it didn't come to mind to me before ). I am currently using a Linksys wireless 10/100 with draft 801.22n. When I get the new router, I can probably even find the right settings on current one to configure it as a wireless relay so I get better signal range. Don't know if using a "draft" 801.22n as a relay for a "final" 801.22n would propose random glitches though. Nor if relaying one brand of router to another would make things a bit more confusing.

I've been reading about some questionable business practices of Cisco/Linksys on some posts here. How some of their routers transmit "anonymous" statistical info (sites you visit, etc) to their servers without at least letting the public know they do that in their policy. Not sure how accurate the rumors are though. Anyway, I've been thinking of switching to D-Link (at least for my primary hardware). I heard they get better signal strength and security anyway.

I wouldn't put any effort in to using the second IP and place everything behind one router. Cisco recently announced that they have stopped collecting information. However you could use DD-WRT or Tomato to get around that issue also.

Haven't given Tomato a try yet. I think I will.
