Quick car question: headlights and passing inspection

What, exactly, is checked in relation to your headlights when you get a car inspected?
Do they both have to just light up, or do they check more into it, like if they're the correct brightness or aligned properly?

I thought they got rid of that all over the country... I know they dont have em in FL anymore...

well, they inspect your car when you go and get your D/L.

i think he's talking about an annual inspection when you renew your registration. they wanna make sure you're smog and emissions legal as well as have all your proper safety equipment working.

They only got rid of it in FL b/c they realized that it was actually MORE dangerous to have inspections because so many old folks who would normally not bother driving will attempt to drive once a year to get their car inspected just in case they might want to drive later in the year.

The places that I take my car to here in NY state just check to see if they light up. They would probably say something if the brightness was way off (very dim), but they haven't yet. They never check for proper alignment, they did mention to me once that the alignment was off. Lynn

They check if the lights work and also there alignment,well at least in Taxachusetts.

Does everyone else,besides FL,have to pay thirty bucks a year for inspection like we do up in MA?

I think it is $20.00 in Virginia.

The guy I go to has a meter to check the brightness, but the meter is so old that I don't think it is very accurate.

we dont pay for inspection, but yearly registration.
