quick Doom3 question

Will it require DX8.1 or will it run on DX7? Sorry if this is an obvious question.

Neither. Carmack doesn't use them.

I'm not 100% sure and I would guess even id Software would say they don't know for sure, but I would guess it would require DX8.1 at least, perhaps even DX9 depending on when it's finally released. However, id Software always uses OpenGL for their graphics and when Quake 3 came out I found it strange that it would play just fine on NT 4.0 which has DX3, but on Windows 98 it required the then newest version of DX7 to play.

All IDs games don't require any level of DirectX, but I think they have it included just in case one of the sub systems fail. The audio and video are totally asm based, but some input code could possibly be DX (doutbful).

Ok (it's just that I ordered a GF4 64mb 440Go vid card with my laptop and want to be able to play D3, even if it means 800x600).

A GF4 64mb 440Go should more than meet the min requirements. According to Firingsquad

Require??? None!!!

Most of them do not even support it yet.
Making games not run on a DirectX 7 platform is suicide - there are too many people without vertex shaders.

No it won't.

It is optimized for the DX 8 cards - Radeon 8500/GeForce3

Carmack said it will run smoothly on them and even the new MOBILE Radeon 9000 (see Anand's latest article).
