quick html help

I've forgotten if this was possible or not:

two column table, left col is 160px and i'd like the right col to take the rest of the available space. how to do so?

Just make the table width 100% and specify the first column as 160px. The next column should fill in the rest.

if you don't specify the width of the second column it will fill the rest of the page (assuming you set the width of the table to 100%)

You can mix them if they are on different things.

<td width=160>column1</td><td>column2</td>
</tr></table>

You just shoudln't have one column be set in pixels and the next column be set in percentages. That just gets all wacky when people have different sized resolutions and screens and such.

why?

A) Consistency purposes
B) If you change one value one place, you're going to have to (probably) change the other values as well. Keeping it either one or the other helps in these cases.

yes i agree for the most part, but there are plenty of times when it is perfectly acceptable and mandatory to use percentages on a table, and absolute values on a td.
