okay i have this antec 550 TPII EPS12v i received as a present and i was playing around with it so i just plugged it into the wall without a mobo and tried to to turn it on. Nothing happened, is it doa or does it need a mobo connection to power on?

Yes, it needs a mobo connection. You can short the green wire to a black wire (on the 24-pin connector), and this will turn it on. Some PSUs require a load to operate--I'm not sure if the Antecs do or not.
You do not need a mobo but you still need to short the green and any black wire from the mobo power connector. The "shorting" of the two wires should just be momentarily. You can put a load like a fan or two using a molex connector. Although, some PSU needs some load on the 5V rail. In this case use a hdd or optical drive.
